🐫 day vibes ✨ with activated charcoal: it is health that is the real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver —————————————————
Activated charcoal has been used for thousands of years by cultures around the world from the ancient Egyptians to Victorian England. What is it though and how does it work!?
Activated charcoal is a fine black odorless, tasteless powder made from superheating sources of carbon such as wood or coconut shells that make it highly adsorbent of particles and gases. Adsorbent meaning they bind to particles and inhibit the body from absorbing them. It’s versatile adsorbing properties have a wide range of medicinal and cosmetic uses, though scientifically proven research is limited. In addition activated charcoal has been documented as treatment for overdoses in ERs, stomach bugs, colic, infant jaundice, indigestion and heartburn, tooth pain, stinging bug bites, as well as whitening teeth!
One lesser known use, which I’ve recently discovered, is helping to deal with reactions to food allergies. There is limited published research on how effective activated charcoal is but from my pilot test I truly believe activated charcoal decreases my symptoms. Whether it’s by binding to other inflammatory proteins or whether it actually does bind to harmful food proteins, I feel a world of difference. There is a wide range in recommended dosage for non-poison related dose and the amount will vary person to person but a general guideline is 500-1040mg of activated charcoal with water up to 4 times daily until symptoms subside. It is important to note contraindications and side effects. Can cause constipation and dehydration and should be taken with plenty of water. Absorptive nature may cause it to interfere with prescription and over the counter medications so it should be taken 3 hrs before or after taking medications. Consult a dr for long term use.
