Common Crane in flight In Ireland, despite being extinct for over 200 years, the common crane plays a very important part in Irish culture and folklore and so thus recent efforts to encourage it back to Ireland are received with much enthusiasm. The Kranich Museum in Hessenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany, is dedicated to art and folklore related to the common crane. The common crane is the sacred bird of the god Hephaestus, and it features heavily in the god's iconography. . . . #wildlifphotography #naturephotography #birdphotography #birds_adored #pocket_birds #birdinflight #birdingfriends #birdsofinstagram #commoncrane #crane #birds_adored #bird_captures #indianwildlifeofficial #planetearth #birding #birdwatching #nikon #nikonindia #wild #india #your_best_birds #bestbirdshots #nikon #nikonindia #thebirdingsquad #best_birds_planet #jc_wings

Tropical Kingbird in Tofino. I came for the pelagics, and stayed for the neotropics. What an incredible place. Thinking too of my Alaskan birding friends searching for their own Tropical Kingbird, a bird to watch for anywhere along the coast. Tomorrow, if the weather holds, I’ll be offshore with @lenaware @joachimbertrands @blairdudeck @parzudak @bcbirdergirl @siobhandarling. Thanks to everyone for a fantastic trip to the coast. #tubenoses4ever #lovepterodroma #pelagicbirding #bcbirds #tofino #thayersgull #amphitritepoint #birdingfriends #birdingvi #tropicalkingbird #palmwarbler #yukonbirder #coastalheart

A female Fire-tailed Sunbird It is found in the northern parts of the Indian subcontinent, primarily in the Himalayas, and also in some adjoining regions in Southeast Asia. The species occurs in Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand and Tibet. Its natural habitats are temperate forests and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. Males reach a length of 15 cm. including their long tail; females are about two-thirds that length. They live in conifer forests at altitudes up to 4,000 meters, descending into the valleys during the cold season. They eat insects, and also nectar. Both parents take part in feeding the young. . . . #wildlifphotography #naturephotography #birdphotography #birding #eye_spy_birds #birdingfriends #jc_wings #birds #sunbird #firetailedsunbird #thebirdingsquad #pocket_birds #birdsofinstagram #himalalayas #nepal #chitwannationalpark #colours #biodiversity #naturalhistory #sanctusryasia #natureinfocus #nif

Crimson-backed Sunbird or Small Sunbird The crimson-backed sunbird or small sunbird(Leptocoma minima) is a sunbird endemic to the Western Ghats of India. Like other sunbirds, they feed mainly on nectar although they take insects, especially to feed their young. They are tiny birds that are resident and are found in forests but are particularly attracted to gardens at the edge of the forest where people grow suitable flower-bearing plants. They usually perch while taking nectar. . . . #wildlifphotography #birdphotography #birdingfriends #birding #birdwatching #pocket_birds #indianwildlifeofficial #eye_spy_birds #sunbird #forest #planetearth #wild #avian #birds_adored #birdsofinstagram #travelphotography #naturephotography #birds_ig #bird_captures #india #westernghats #your_best_birds #thebirdingsquad

Common Kingfisher - arguably the best diver in the world. . . A challenge for any diving bird is the change in refraction between air and water. The eyes of many birds have two foveae (the fovea is the area of the retina the greatest density of light receptors), and a kingfisher is able to switch from the main central fovea to the auxiliary fovea when it enters water; a retinal streak of high receptor density which connects the two foveae allows the image to swing temporally as the bird drops onto the prey. The egg-shaped lens of the eye points towards the auxiliary fovea, enabling the bird to maintain visual acuity underwater. Because of the positions of the foveae, the kingfisher has monocular vision in air, and binocular vision in water. The underwater vision is not as a sharp as in air, but the ability to judge the distance of moving prey is more important than the sharpness of the image. Each cone cell of a bird’s retina contains an oil droplet which may contain carotenoid pigments. These droplets enhance colour vision and reduce glare. Aquatic kingfishers have high numbers of red pigments in their oil droplets; the reason red droplets predominate is not understood, but the droplets may help with the glare or the dispersion of light from particulate matter in the water. . . Indian Paradise Flycatcher- Male . . The Indian paradise flycatcher (Terpsiphone paradisi) is a medium-sized passerine bird native to Asia that is widely distributed. Indian paradise flycatchers are noisy birds uttering sharp skreek calls. They have short legs and sit very upright whilst perched prominently, like a shrike. They are insectivorous and hunt in flight in the understorey. In the afternoons they dive from perches to bathe in small pools of water. They are migratory and spend the winter season in tropical Asia. There are resident populations in southern India and Sri Lanka, hence both visiting migrants and the locally breeding subspecies occur in these areas in winter. . . #wildlifphotography #birdphotography #birdingfriends #birding #birdwatching #pocket_birds #indianwildlifeofficial #eye_spy_birds #flycatcher #indianparadiseflycatcher #forest #planetearth #wild #avian #birds_adored #birdsofinstagram #vasai #travelphotography #naturephotography #birds_ig #bird_captures #india #maharashtra #westernghats
