Here’s a small clip from Kim’s 2018 CCTS seminar!
I love the advice that he shares about setting realistic goals, and I will take his point a step further. As Kim states, many of us get fixated on a placing. We set an all or nothing expectation for ourselves and when our expectations are not met we get discouraged and fall off the deep end. I would add that by setting goals just to get better with each show, we have a better chance of maintaining the excitement and enthusiasm to keep going. But when we set ourselves up for an all or nothing outcome, we are setting ourselves up for discouragement & burn out. My advice is this…remember why you started competing in the first place. Before you knew anything about callouts, pro cards, and judging criteria. Why did you start? What was your purpose? Let that be your driving force, and eventually, everything else will eventually fall in place.
But more importantly, you will have the endurance to compete for the long-term and enjoy the journey along the way. After all, we all got started in this sport for different reasons but as diverse as those reasons are they all come back to the fact that (for most of us) this is a hobby and hobbies should be fun!
