Via @pagepulp: Have you ever read a book so good that you'd silently (or not so silently) judge someone who didn't like it or had no interest in it? The logical part of your brain might gently attempt to remind you that taste in all things, books included, is subjective and personal, and there is no "right" opinion, but the emotional side hisses that anyone who didn't love it is a fool? That's Madeline Miller's Circe for me. I was already a big fan of hers, but this one knocked my socks off. I mean, Song of Achilles knocked my socks off first, but Circe...threw them all the way out of the room? This metaphor is getting away from me. What I'm getting at is that it's a stunning book, from cover to cover.
Circe, powerful witch and daughter of a Titan, is known primarily for her part in The Odyssey where she turns Odysseus's men into pigs. Madeline Miller goes beyond Circe's swine enthusiast days and tells the full story of her life, from her birth and beyond. It's a much more sympathetic portrait of Circe than I've seen before. Here she is an outcast, self-doubting and largely mocked by her mighty and cruel family. It is not until she is exiled (not really a spoiler since the story is thousands of year old) that she is able to gain confidence in herself and tap into the vast well of her power.
That's not to say she is portrayed as being flawless. No, at times she is impetuous, reckless, and thoughtless--all with strong consequences. Her flaws don't weaken her character, though. It is the existence of those flaws that allows her to grow, to challenge herself, to be all the more compelling. If you pick up Circe, which you should, prepare to be intoxicated.
“The thought was this: that all my life had been murk and depths, but I was not a part of that dark water. I was a creature within it.”
