I work with a decent amount of distance clients who train out of their own home gym. Fantastic! But I get the excuse a lot “I can’t do that movement I don’t have the machine”. . This week has been absolutely crazy!! With the wedding of one of my best friends #onceuponathompson this weekend and the rehearsal Thursday I’ve had to shift a lot of my schedule around. . I’ve gotten the awesome opportunity to work 15-18hours with clients each day. Sounds like a lot? Well, it is... but I love it! . Because of the crazy workload it would make sense that I skip my workouts. Right? Wrong! I practice what I fucking PREACH! I make the time! . Working out is crucial for my physical and mental well being, therefore I make the damn time for it. No matter what. Yes something else must suffer and in this case it is an hour or so of sleep. But I can make up missed sleep (actual studies on sleep banking exist), I can never make up for a missed workout. . Through working such crazy hours I’ve learned a lot about myself. I’ve learned I really don’t give a damn what others think about me or my body. I went through a dramatic weight loss and as a result I have loose skin on my stomach. I was always petrified to be caught with my shirt off. But, now I could care less! Because I know that what I can do with my body is amazing. I know people who work 10% of what I do in the gym and look so much better shirtless. But I earned how I look, and I’m going to own that! Expanding on good habits. Who here journals? Every day I take 10-15minutes before I workout to take a self inventory. I write down my workout, the pen to paper connection helps me focus on what’s at task. Then I take an inventory of my body. My daily weight, hours slept, the quality of those hours, my stress level, my motivation, and my fatigue/soreness. This was the motivation for the magnets my clients all should be filling out at each visit. The goals can stay the same but our focus will change. Without focus we are simply going through the motions. And we all know that leads to decreased motivation and results. Through the summer me and my athletes focus on a lot of conditioning work. Why? For one I love to take advantage of good weather and get outside or have the door open whenever I can. Conditioning work allows for a lot of outdoor opportunities and it’s just one way to keep workouts fun. The other big reason is to build up the oxidative (endurance) capacity and glycolitic power so that when we focus back on strength work toward the colder months, we have a greater capacity to move greater volumes at higher loads and to be able to recover quicker from workout to workout. . Another bonus in working oxidative capacity is your bodies ability to oxidize (mobilize) fats. This is a huge benefit for those strength athletes whom tend to carry more fat mass during meet season. . There’s always an open discussion about whether or not there is an off-season for strength athletes. I tend to believe that there are benefits to taking time off from competing and focusing on other aspects of training. How do you start your athletes learning a split jerk? I like to start with a Chinese jerk drill, which is performed with no bar and is simply running through the movement of a smooth dip and then an aggressive drive while maintaining positioning. . Things we don’t want to see are a forward translation of the torso or a weight shift into the front of the foot during the dip. All of those things will translate into the bar coming away from the body and finishing out front. Usually resulting in a missed lift. . This is @amfippen first ever attempts at a split jerk, and they’re pretty damn good! Because she listens and suffered through the boring drills. The hardest part about this, showering after. Ouch!! My shins were on 🔥 . Coming back from an injury I’m always extremely conscious of loading. What nobody saw was the 8 weeks leading up to this one set of 400lbsx5. Slowly adding 5-10lbs every week to the same rep scheme. I knew I could pull this weight, I’ve done it before and way more weight. . What it comes down to is the adaptive tissue (in this case muscle) being able to withstand the load. Whenever you exceed this limit it always increases a risk of injury. To get around this we program so that we aren’t hitting max effort weight every session (beginners are a little different as every session can be a perceived ME). . So! Bottom line, leave your ego out of it. Be smart, focus on one technique cue a session. All I can say after Alex hit his first 300lbs squats for 5 is... that was fun!! This is exactly why I love this stuff so much. He and @chasethegreat had only met once before, but working out together and cheering each other on you’d have thought they known each other for years. . Improving yourself around other like minded people always leads to the best atmosphere! . Alex continues to profess, squats get deeper and heavier, and at this point we’re not even sure how many pounds he’s lost off his body! I can’t say enough about this guy! I mean, I could pretty much write Alex’s online dating profile. . He listens, retains, works his ass off, never complains, finishes what he starts, always gives his best effort no matter the circumstances. . If you have a goal you want bad enough, you’ll MAKE ways to MAKE it happen. . “I don’t have time to workout” I hear it all the time. All that says to me is that you’re not willing to put in the effort to make the time and you don’t want it enough. . I coached 12 hours yesterday. Since I’ve built the habit over YEARS (nothing happens overnight) I made the time, sacrificed some mid day rest time, sucked it up, got outside and got a great workout done in less than 30 minutes. . Yeah... I work and live at a gym. I get that, but I honestly don’t give a shit! If I didn’t work at a gym, which I didn’t always, I’d still make a way to get it in. Why? Because that’s just the person I’ve made myself. . I definitely didn’t always used to be like this. My free time was strictly video games, food, and crying about being fat. .
