Lately I’ve been having some QL, piriformis, and psoas issues. So pretty much my hips feel like they’re exploding. . Why? I have a leg length discrepancy and this issue arises once or twice a year when I neglect muscle balances. . Being to focused on the really big movements (squat, deads, cleans, snatch, and bench) can lead to even more imbalance. . What’s the solution? It differs from person to person. Having a coach that understands you and your body is crucial to finding a solution. For me, a few weeks of focusing on unilateral movements really seems to alleviate the issue. . I’m writing all of this freehand, so bare with me. . When I first started all of this I didn’t care about being strong. Mentally or physically, I didn’t give a shit. . I just wanted women to look at me. To not just fade to the background of every setting. To not be the fat guy in every room. To not hate the way I felt about myself. . As I sit here typing this I’m getting emotional. Not because of where I was physically and how far I’ve come, but because of how weak I was mentally. . I’m not doing all of this anymore just because I want to look good. I crave the challenge. The constant mental imbalance of feeling like complete shit and not believing I can do anything, and the drastic juxtaposition of feeling like I could lift the world. . Fitting those inner dialogues and succeeding is why I still do this. I’m not only physically and mentally stronger in the gym, but in life. Before all of this I had no direction and no purpose. Can I tell you a secret? Ok, I will but only if you respond to my question at the end! You promise?! Ok here we go! I’m all my clients see this and respond too! 😁 . When I first started this, I was terrified. I was anxious any time anyone ever even asked me about what I was doing. When someone would come in for a consultation I would be so nervous that I could feel my hands getting sweaty. Then I’d be even more nervous that I’d go to shake their hand and they’d know how nervous I was!!! . Fair to say that doesn’t happen as much anymore. Sure I still get anxious when I have someone new coming in, but that’s not because I’m not confident in myself it’s because I truly want to help them and I hope they see that. . I was always terrified about the possibility of the negative things that somebody could say instead of believing in myself that I can convey I’m here for them. I remember vividly how nervous I was just to meet @kt.swan and talk about how we could work together to help her! Which is crazy to think about now because we’ve been working together for so long and I consider her a great friend! . Why am I telling you this? Because I want everyone to see that everyone gets anxiety about doing something that’s new to them. I felt the exact same way the first time I ever went into a gym! It’s so scary doing something new. And the process is always the same. Initially you suck at it, you get frustrated, but then you get a little better. You see the improvement and then you crave it. It’s all a part of growing. . So now comes the part you answer. It’s really cool to think about where you started and how far you’ve come. ___ I remember in high school during weights class I would look at the girls who could bench with the 25lb plates on each side and WISH I could do that. I thought there was NO WAY I could get to that point. ___ Then I got to college and I could FINALLY bench 95lbs and use the big-small plates. I thought that was it. I did it. There was nothing else to accomplish after that - lol. ___ Fast forward to adult Sarah, I made it my goal to use the big-big plates and guess what? Today it happened!! Only slightly died hitting 135x1. ___ While I’ll never be the strongest, the leanest, the fastest or most athletic, I’ve still come so far compared to where I was. (Insert inspirational quote about how you can’t compare your journey to someone else’s.) ___ So take a moment to think about where you started and how far you’ve come. If you aren’t where you want to be or you’ve slipped up a couple times, think about everything you’ve learned in the process! You’re constantly growing and becoming a better version of yourself every day. Bands are an amazing implementation to use when learning how to do a pull-up. However, too often you see people using too strong a band and just flailing up and down. The movement should still be strict and very controlled. Initiate by pulling the shoulder blades down and together and engaging the lats. If you watch my armpits in the video you can see how engaged my lats are and how it controls the entire movement. After that it just comes down to keeping a tight core. So proud of @powderbuffgirl . This wasn’t a comeback meet, it was the beginning of something new! . Over the last year we decided that Tiff should go down a weight class. Also in that decision was that this would most likely be her last USPA meet and begin her transition into USAPL. Over that year we slowly dropped her weight from 172 down to 149lbs. Not even losing an ounce of strength through the process because macros are god! . Tiff at her new bodyweight squatted an easy 281lbs, benched 143lbs, and deadlifted 330lbs. . Who’s holding you back? Let me know, I’m legitimately curious. . Chances are it’s your self. . We all do it, we all set up fail safes in our mind to protect us from disappointment. Apparently our egos are all so fragile that failing at the most minute tasks will forever change our own perceptions of ourselves. . Really that’s all bullshit. You fail at anything, you learn from it. If you’ve ever been successful at anything chances are you failed multiple times at that task before. . Example? Well, going in to the clap pushups in my mind I had a battle of my inner dialogues. “You can’t do these.” “You’re going to fall on your face and everyone’s going to laugh at you” “you’re no athlete, you’re still a fatty”. Eventually I turned up the music and tuned out the nonsense. . First set, I got 8 reps! 8 reps! That’s insane to me. I’ve never attempted these before because of fear. Easy to say I no longer fear them. . Take a chance today. So you think you don’t have the time to train? Well, let me tell you a little about Sarah’s schedule. . She drove to Indy after her @wwe live show in Dayton. She got here at 1am, I woke up to let her in the house and to eat some food. Then she asks “What time do you get up for clients today?” I responded with 6am. “Ok, wake me up then.” . So I did, finished with my first client @nykiboone, who killed it today (I might’ve killed her too tho...), and by that time Sarah was out in the gym ready to lift! . Boy did she lift! She sure would’ve made the @bornprimitive crew proud! She hit some heavy lifts she hasn’t in years, all in 4 hours of sleep! . Now I’m not saying cut your sleep way back for the sake of workouts. But! If there is a goal you know you want, there shouldn’t be anything standing in your way. . I am down right honored that not only Sarah is a great friend of mine, but that I get to coach such a bad ass woman! . This is why I do it! ❤️❤️❤️ “Back in May/June (2017) I was struggling to with my mental and physical state, but then Drew reached out to me. He told me I could come try out a free session (which was even more of a bonus) to see if I would love it or not. Obviously, I ended up loving it and signing up. He showed compassion and interest in my goals. Which wasn’t something I was used to in a fitness setting. At first, I signed up for 2 sessions a week but then I changed it to 3 because I wanted to get more workouts in each week. I could’ve done it on my own but having Drew’s guidance and expertise are what I need. The experience I have gained through all these months is amazing. I’ve learned how to lift weights properly, to push myself mentally, and how to count macros. Learning all 3 things has made me a healthy person all around. Going to each workout knowing Drew won’t ever give up on me is great. One time, I cried through a whole workout because mentally I was hurting but he still put a smile on my face at the end and pushed me through it. Knowing you have a fantastic coach pushing you through anything is exactly what I needed and what everyone needs. Taking progress pictures each month helps to see how much you’ve changed. I wouldn’t have known the difference (myself) without those pictures. It’s crazy to see how strong I’ve gotten but also how lean I’m getting. Because of him I even stepped out of my comfort zone and did my first Powerlifting meet! He’s shown me I’m more than just a number, and validating yourself from a number will only bring you down! I can’t wait to learn more about my own body and what I can accomplish, especially with Drew always keeping a positive atmosphere! Thank you, for helping me not only physically but mentally so much. I never realized how much working out helps relieve stress, anxiety, and depression. It gives you something more to focus on and have a extreme amount of passion for!” -Kenzie . . .

#transformationtuesday It’s crazy to me that I spent the first 18years of my life terrified to go to a gym because I was scared of being judged. And now, I’m one of the more successful people in that same “judgemental” field. . I pride myself on that fact that I always have a non-judgement environment. I completely understand where someone is coming from when they walk into a gym for the first time. Exercise is terrifying!! Especially if you’re afraid of being judged. . Exercising is vulnerable. We’re out of breath, all sweaty, smelly, and just generally wet in places we shouldn’t be. If you’re overweight you’re damn right that’s scary! We’re already always wondering who is judging us! But I’ve got a secret for all you, nobody gives a DAMN what or who you are doing! . So! I say forget all the worry! Do what’s best for you. It’s about that time of year I start getting asked about getting a beach body. . That usually implies a six pack. . But your spine hurts doing crunches!? Duh!! . Well, Coach Drew... what do I do for abs then?! . My favorite rule for training abs is, make it awkward... carries! . The more awkward the better! Here is a great example! I loaded my yoke irregularly having weights catty corner. This forces me to utilize my entire core to brace and balance the yoke. . To make it even more anterior core focused (abs) I switched the way I carried it to a front rack! This forces you to use your rectus abdominus (abs) a little more because you’re using your abs to resist extending your back. .
