Out exploring and brushing up on twig ID for a winter twigs class at the end of January. I think it's rad when we seemingly have nothing to work with we can still learn from the plants. Like just how creepy red twig dogwood buds can be! . . #arctosschool #wintertwigs #plantid #knowyourplants #botanistsofinstagram #senseofplace #cornusstolonifera #weprayinthegarden

I must confess to a certain botanical favoritism when it comes to elecampane. It is an indispensable remedy for the winter months!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌼⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The roots are a stimulating expectorant, helpful for expelling thick, heavy mucus from the recesses of the lungs.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌼⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Elecampane is also antibacterial, adding another angle of assistance in overcoming and preventing bacterial respiratory infections. It has been used traditionally to treat bronchitis, tuberculosis, pneumonia, and asthma.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌼⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The roots are bitter, with a peck of sweetness and spice, making elecampane a highly useful digestive bitter. Elecampane can be prepared as a decoction, an infused honey, a syrup, or a tincture for these purposes.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌼⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Care to learn more about this aromatic healer? We feature elecampane in our Online Herbal Immersion, the most comprehensive online course in DIY herbalism there is! Find the course link in our bio!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌼⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ *Please research any new herb and consult your health care providers for possible drug/herb contraindications and precautions before ingesting. Avoid elecampane in pregnancy. Those with Asteraceae allergies should exercise caution. Be sure you are harvesting the right species because there are deadly look-alikes (including foxglove/Digitalis spp.).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌼⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #elecampane #inulahelenium #botanygeek #plantgeek #botanical #herbnerd #plantsmakepeoplehappy #plantsofinstagram #botanist #botanistsofinstagram #botanicalnomenclature #botanicalinterests #instabotany #instaplants #instaflower #botanicallife #herbalmedicine #herbalscience #naturelovers #botanyisbitchin #botanicalliving #botanicalpickmeup #botanicaldaydreams #allthingsbotanical #justbefloral #botanicalbeauty⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ (Inula helenium, Asteraceae)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Photo © Juliet Blankespoor

One of the few plants that blooms in the late fall, witch hazel is easily identifiable this time of year!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ~⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Witch hazel tea helps ease sore throats, diarrhea, colds, coughs, bruising, and helps prevent post-partum hemorrhage. The tannins in witch hazel lessen sinus inflammation from allergies, sinus infections, and head colds. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌿⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Topically, witch hazel is applied as a compress to heal varicose veins and hemorrhoids. The strong tea, applied as a wash, is a folk remedy for poison ivy.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌿⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This is a wee excerpt from my article on witch hazel. Read more on our Blog Castanea (link in bio)! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌿⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ (Hamamelis virginiana, Hamamelidaceae).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Photo © Juliet Blankespoor⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌿⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Please research any new herb and consult your health care providers for possible drug/herb contraindications and precautions before ingesting. Be sure of your identification before ingesting any plant or mushroom. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌿⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #witchhazel #hamamelis #hamamelisvirginiana #botanygeek #plantgeek #botanical #herbnerd #plantsmakepeoplehappy #plantsofinstagram #botanist #botanistsofinstagram #instabotany #instaplants #instaflower #instanature #botanicallife #herbalmedicine #herbalscience #holistichealing #flowers #gardening #naturelovers #plantstagram #botanyisbitchin #botanicalliving #botanicalpickmeup #botanicaldaydreams #allthingsbotanical #justbefloral #botanicalbeauty

Ok botanically inclined friends! I may have made an exciting discovery... or maybe I didn’t. There is an absolutely noxious tree in my backyard called “paper mulberry.” It’s highly invasive and produces a ludicrous amount of pollen. Now that I know what it is, I see it everywhere in Virginia. While on my walk, I found this specimen, what I believe to a true variegated version. I have put a side by side comparison between a regular seedling and a variegated one. Now I have found online variegated mulberry of other species and it’s possible this is it. However, I think that this may be a naturally occurring mutation. Thoughts?? #papermulberry #invasivespecies #botany #gardening #varigated #tree #arborist #mutation #botanistsofinstagram #plantid #olantidentification

#pomologists #arboristsofinstagram #botanistsofinstagram can you help? These are ostensibly two #calamansitrees, the one on the left imported from portugal, the one on the right grown in #hongkong. The left one is producing #verylargefruit (large for calamansi) that isn't very seedy as all other #calamansi I have tasted is. The orange fruit in the pic (shown with a ruler so you can see the size) is the #calamansipretender while the green fruit is a real calamansi. The tree on the right hasn't borne fruit since I bought it but the vendor says the fruit is very sweet, which makes me suspicious. As you can see the leaves of the two are very different. #whatarethey?

Babies! Potted up a dozen flats of #medicinalplants over the last few days with the #gardeningformedicine class. Nearly all were raised from seed gathered at the #medicinegarden so they have a knowledge of place. The lineage of these plant friends have been with me a decade now. And I love pondering their adventures into the gardens of others! One of my most precious plants surprised me with a flower today. This is barely 1cm across. Botany time. This belongs to one of the coolest families, which also has milkweed, which feeds monarch butterflies, and Stapelia, also known as carrion flowers. Lots of people also recognise Ceropegia, aka string of hearts, now that it's so popular. Such a tiny, special little gift today! ❤️❤️❤️ . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #botanicalpickmeup #plantsmakepeoplehappy #houseplantsclub #botanicalphotography #realhouseplantsofinstagram #houseplantsofinstagram #interiorjungle #ihavethisthingwithplants #plantlady #urbanjungle #succulentcity #plantshelfie #jungalow #jungalowstyle #urbanjunglebloggers #plantsarefriends #interiorrewilding #stapeliad #rhytidicaulonmacrolobum #asclepiad #asclepiadaceae #apocynaceae #weirdplants #succsofinstagram #succulentas #succulentlover @therealhouseplantsof_ig #botanistsofinstagram #botany #desertplants #succulentflower

Up the Mountain: Botanical Hike Friday July 27 9-6pm On this journey, Gradey Proctor of the Medicine Garden and the #arctoschool will introduce us to the wonders of #forests and #meadows alike. We'll spend our time high on Mt. Hood, where the #trees give way to #valerian, #arnica, and #falsehellebore. We’ll take in the #mountain air and meet many new #plants while we talk ways of reclaiming our #health. Expect to learn some #botany, #wildcrafting tips, and perhaps do a little #foraging on this three-mile hike. This may be your last chance to see so many #flowers 'til next spring. So this week I’ve had the pleasure of working with specimens from as early as 1909, when Edwardian botanists/hobbyists were trecking around fields and river banks collecting this plant as an oddity, not realising how invasive it would become. The specimens are remarkably preserved and have retained so much colour, really awesome curatorial work. Some specimens had very detailed hand written notes, it’s amazing to think that someone sat down and wrote that over a hundred years ago not realising the importance it would have to science in the 21st century. Awesome stuff!
