“What are you?” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✔️It’s cool to be curious about a person’s ethnicity, but there’s a better way to ask. Also cool: casually rocking that decked out sari blouse. 😎

Actor, feminist, humanitarian — just a few words that describe the dynamite who is @JameelaJamilOfficial. It was February 2009, when this quirky, tall and slightly nervous looking British South Asian presenter exploded on to U.K.’s Channel 4. The cynic in me, of course, assumed this was just a strategy to tick the “brown skin on-screen” box. How wrong was I?! - Born with both an Indian and Pakistani heritage, Jamil is one of the few television personalities of colour in mainstream media from the U.K. who has had the courage to use her platform to disrupt traditional narratives of how women should be moulded to fit into society. Speaking out openly on her history of anorexia and calling out fat-shamers and air-brushing. - For instance, when Jameela responded to the overwhelming support for calling out the Kardashians on their lack of social responsibility whilst in the public eye, Jamil created an Instagram account, “I Weigh” — dedicated to and encouraging fans and loved ones to share posts on how they “weigh” their happiness. - Click on the link in our bio to read top ten reasons why we LOVE Jameela — courtesy of Sejal Sehmi (@sejalsehmi) — and need her to be BFF status with us immediately.👯‍♀️✨🤞🏽 - 📸 @nylonmag - #browngirlmag #beingBG #Browngirl

Which is your favorite? 😊 1 😘 2 🤩 3 🥰 4 😍 5 . . My dad is home for the holidays and by home....I mean Bangladesh 🇧🇩 He landed safely in Dhaka this morning and as any brown girl knows, prices are lower and quality is equal or better in clothing from South Asia compared to boutiques here in the US. I sent my dad my measurements and these inspiration images for my reception anarkali. I'll have a white dress for the ceremony but am hoping he can find something that suits me and my style while he's there. He'll also be scoping out that wedding ✨BLING✨ to see if it's more reaosnably priced there. I'll keep y'all updated if we figure something out!

It's necessary to educate and bring to people's awareness that #bodyshaming is inhumane. Everyone is born unique, special, and talented with a definite purpose. You are you, because you are not anyone else. That's what makes you, you. It takes courage to put oneself in front of the eyes of another and showcase their talents. Sometimes the commenters on #YouTube do not realize the ignorance and negativeness of their words. No one has the right to judge another human. However, we do have the responsibility to uplift each other with peace, unity, and love. Keep supporting those around you in their activities and hobbies. This is what our YouTube channel and team stands for. Spread the love of dance no matter what shape, size, height, or color you are. #pronoiacreations ▪️▫️▪️▫️▪️▫️▪️▫️▪️▫️▪️▫️▪️▫️▪️▫️▪️▫️▪️▫️▪️▫️▪️▫️▪️▫️▪️▫️▪️▫️▪️▫️ #Repost from @iamaahanaa ........................................................................... I want to thank everyone for viewing/liking my video and taking out time to comment something positive about it! This has motivated me to do even better next and I am extremely grateful for it. And a big big thank you to those who wrote negative comments as well. Thank you so much for taking out time to comment something about my body or my dance. That never truly affected me,but showed how desperate you were to try to make me feel bad. Anyways! Thank you for trying, it didn't really work! Better luck next time:) To my supporters! I can't thank you enough for your positivity and for writing supportive comments and making my day❤ P.S. "A few weeks ago, sitting in a packed theater in Seattle, WA, @RupiKaur_ led me through one serious emotional journey. I could feel my body waking up to the words of 'how we make up.' As she explained 'unibrow,' I was transported back to an almost identical conversation I had with my own younger brother 15 years prior. I had to close my eyes as my own experiences with self-harm were reflected back at me during 'self-hate.' And as she recited “broken Englishn,” I was brought to tears by getting the clearest picture I’ve ever had of my immigrant mother’s extraordinary life. In these ways and so many others, Rupi is me.🙌🏽👯‍♀️ - In recent years, I’ve found myself more frequently reflecting on the multiple different aspects of my own identity. I am an American citizen by birth, a fact that feels so mundane that I rarely see the worth in mentioning it. I’ve also lived in predominantly white environments my entire life and surrounded myself with white friends who accepted my different skin tone with such ease that I rarely acknowledged my 'other-ness.' In many ways, I can relate more to white people I’ve never met than I can to my own first cousins, my flesh and blood, who grew up in India. - Finally, as a teenager and in my early 20s, being a woman felt like the most important part of my identity, and as such, I identified with so many representations of young female experiences reflected back at me from the stage and screen. But there have always been limits to these representations, points at which the image is no longer a full, accurate reflection of me, but of the white girl sitting next to me, and try as I might, I simply can’t relate. I wonder now if, at some point, I tacitly accepted that those limits would always exist, that parts of me weren’t worthy of representation in popular culture, and as a coping mechanism, I downplayed the importance of my cultural identity to myself." —Arushi 💯✨ - Click on the link in our bio to continue reading Arushi’s love letter to Rupi Kaur, and comment below with your favorite poem. P.S. Who else is excited to see her words etched on one-of-a-kind canvases?!? 🥰🥰 - #browngirlmag #beingBG #browngir

Today is my birthday and it's also #wcw so I'm celebrating myself. Yes, that's right. We all spend enough time criticizing and doubting ourselves instead of focusing on self-love and self-care. So today, I'm taking a moment to acknowledge how I've grown this past year. _____________________ Why is it that all we (I) want to do is be present but it's the one thing that most eludes us? We're always worried about what's on our to-do list, what has to get done tomorrow, or what else we need to accomplish so we measure up to people's expectations. But recently, I decided to throw all that to the side and take time to "work" on something important that is often neglected: my mental, emotional, and physical well-being. This time off has helped me take one day at a time and really use every minute the way I want to. _____________________ By ignoring everyone else's definition of success, I've made space to take art classes, learn new photography and calligraphy skills, and spend precious time with my family. Most importantly, I was able to be with my sister during the birth of her son last week and I'm so grateful to have had this time with my baby nephew; time I wouldn't have had if I hadn't stopped to realize I wasn't fully present in anything I was doing. _____________________ It was a difficult and rewarding year but I'm proud of myself for making this choice and asking for the support of my husband and family to do it. And I know how fortunate I am to have been able to take this time when I needed it. I hope everyone can find the support they need and recognize when they need it. Trust me, it's worth it. #happybirthdaytome ❤️ _____________________ #selflove #celebrateyourself #mentalhealthmatters #happybirthdaytome #funemployed #createeveryday #positivenergy #womencrushwednesday #familyisforever #bbg #browngirlmag

pyarful

I often say that what makes Pyarful’s cards special is that they tell a story — of a food, a ritual, a memory, a tradition…something that reminds us of the everyday joys of South Asian culture. And this “Stocking full of Mithai” card is no different. . Over the years, what I've come to appreciate the most about being South Asian American, is how so many of us have weaved together both of our cultural identities. We light up our homes for both Diwali and Christmas; we’ll have our chicken fried or tandoori style; our Christmas mornings begin with chai and egg nog, and on birthdays we sing both "happy birthday" and "baar baar din yeh aaye." And so much more. . . As the holidays roll around, I'm reminded of the beauty of being Indian American 🇮🇳🇺🇸 and why I set out to build Pyarful in the first place. And when I look at this card - a stocking full of jalebi, barfi, and ladoos, that is exactly what I'm reminded of: that two cultures can so beautifully be combined. And that for so many of us South Asians, a stocking full of mithai, like our multicultural world, is absolutely perfect. . . Read the full post on my blog at pyarful.com/blog and, enjoy our biggest sale on holiday cards - 20% off for a limited time! #diversityandinclusion #multicultural #southasiangreetingcards #spreadthepyar

"Oh! You are so beautiful! Would you like to collaborate?" -"Yeah sure, what's the concept?" "I want to do a BOLD photoshoot with you." -"Um okay..what do you mean by BOLD photoshoot?" "Semi nudes/voyeuristic kind " -"What will that signify?" "Boldness and fierceness of a woman." -"Um but you don't have to pose nude for it? Bold doesn't mean posing naked but saying things which aren't been said and heard yet. I am not against women/men who are doing boudoir/nude photoshoots. In fact, I admire their courage and beauty of being able to do things which not everyone can. I have myself posted pictures in minimal clothes but it has never been about clothes. It has always been about thought/idea/concept. And no, I won't be comfortable in posing naked in front of the camera if it shouts BOLD to you. Bold are women who are constantly fighting with their families and society in order to be recognised, bold are women who are posing in lingerie without caring about how they look..with body hair, fat, some skin infection. It shows their acceptance, acknowledgment and confidence in their body and within themselves. Bold are women who are fighting with their deteriorating mental health, women who are raising their voices and getting themselves heard when no one wants to listen to them because their opinion matters. Bold are women are crying in pain from inside but will fake a smile in front of her 7 year old child because she doesn't want to dishearten him. Bold are women who are being a laughing stock for stepping into a male dominating profession, women who are wearing rainbow, women who are wearing blood, women who are wearing burqa and lingerie , who are wearing responsibilities and achievements and those who are struggling to get there, women who are wearing black, white and brown on their skins and be proud of it, women wearing confidence and respect and the one who are striving for same, women who are wearing everything and those who are wearing nothing." ________________________________________________ Clicked by @pranjalasha Artwork by @myinfinitemixtape #browngirlmag #feminisminindia
