"Kirk!" Today we start the daily Batman Animated Series episodic post again starting with the unofficial official pilot episode "On Leather Wings". Now any true BTAS fan knows "On Leather Wings" is technically not the first episode that aired (Cat and the Claw prt. 1 was first aired) but it is considered the pilot by Bruce Timm. The reason for airing The Cat and the Claw first was the hope people would be drawn in by seeing Catwoman, as this was in 1992 when Batman Returns was released. In fact a lot of the design of BTAS are borrowed by Tim Burton's idea of Gotham, Bruce Timm was even allowed to go on set in order to design the Penguin to look like Danny Devito's version, but I digress. This episode featuring Man-Bat is one of the first I ever laid eyes on and I was HOOKED! Not only do we see Man-Bat (which I was unaware of) but we see Batman at odds with Gotham police, who are still not sure if he's good or bad. It's eye candy throughout, which I feel is the darkest and most gothic looking of all the episodes. The most memorable moments to me, are Batman trying to escape a fleet of SWAT teams in a building, and the Kirk Langstrom transformation into the Man-Bat. We also see Batman isn't black and white, he knows Langstrom made a mistake. We see Batman wanting to help an adversary instead of just beat him to a pulp than throw him in Arkham. I really love seeing Batman carrying a normal Langstrom to his wife letting her know he's cured. Or is he? Stay tuned daily for more.
