It’s with a very heavy heart and tears that I share the passing of everyone’s favorite garden pest, Newton the cuddle monster. If you’ve met #NewtonTheHen, you know what I mean. This attention whore was aggressively affectionate. If she deemed you a nice human with good cuddles to give, she would follow you around and peck your legs and bite your clothes until you picked her up. If your arms got tired, she’d stand in front of you and give you a 1-2 minute break before she stared you down for more. If you didn’t understand that stare, you got pecked more. And if you moved away, she’d follow with her stare and pecky beak.
When she was content in your arms, she’d kind of go into a weird trance and stare off into nothing. It was sometimes a rather menacing look. 😂 I hope she finds someone over the chicken rainbow to give her endless cuddles and hope that person’s arms never tire.
We don’t know exactly what was wrong with her. What I thought was a weird crop issue turned out to be more, as I could feel a very enlarged liver, and she had lost lots of weight despite our interventions. She passed a few days ago. I didn’t have the heart to open her up for a necropsy, nor did we want to send her into the state for a necropsy. We feel confident enough that her issues were unique to her and whatever she succumbed to was not something that would put the flock at risk. She’s in our garage fridge right now. We will bury her next to dear Hendrea Bocelli under the future blackberry patch. Newton was 3.5 years old. She spent her last few hours in her favorite way: lap-cuddling, and she took her last breath cradled in our arms.
