Today is the Feast of the Asumption in Spain — a holiday! 🏖 So we worked in the morning and then went to this amazing rocky beach in the afternoon. 🏛 I also learned that the Feast of the Asumption is an extension of an ancient Roman holiday. 🌞 From the official Pompeii Facebook page: “Introduced by Augustus himself, as Feriae Augusti, they started on the first of the month, and lasted for several days, giving peasants the opportunity to take a break from the heat wave and the hard work.
The work in the fields stopped, gatherings and horse races were planned all over the Empire, farm animals, finally allowed to rest, were adorned with flower garlands.
In the VII century, the Catholic Church absorbed the festivity, and changed the day to 15th August, celebrating the Assumption of Virgin Mary.
Walking in the streets, Pompeians would have greeted each other exchanging wishes and gifts. From the Archeological Park of Pompeii, bonas ferias augustales to everyone!”
