Basel 07.27, July 19, 2017. Today, one year ago. iExist is a collaboration between a human and her smartphone. The smartphone is an extension of the hands and eyes. It is a counsellor, a notepad, a visual diary with personal information. The smartphone bridges capturing a private moment and adding it into our collective existence via internet and social media. The smartphone connects people and worlds like never before, they have become an essential part of our identity.
iExist consists of 365 photos taken with my smartphone. Each day I have taken a photo from a window right after getting up in the morning. The series of photos represents a year of my life, one day after another. The photos are displayed as screenshots, sequential, with indication of the place, date and time as shown on the screen of my phone.
The photos show a moment of consciousness; some facts can be derived from the photos and reading the information. However, most of the information about the day, how did it go, how did I feel, what did I do, whom did I met, etc. remain unknown. It is up to the viewer to interpret such details, one shot at a time or as a series. iExist represents a year of my daily life, my visual diary.
