We often highlight Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X and Rosa Parks when we talk about black history. But it was Marcus Garvey who gave them that light which lit their souls. Marcus Garvey had the greatest vision and influence towards our black people. That is why he got deported and why the FBI had a special program to find any way to disrupt him from his pursuit of rising the black civilization. A death sentence for him would have just been fuel to the fire because it wasn’t just equality he was fighting for, it was ownership, self-reliance, power within ourselves to thrive as a community and not have to rely on outside government. Establishment of our own kingdom was the eyes view of Marcus Garvey. “A race without authority and power, is a race without respect.” Education was major and the building block of a civilization that was and is ultimately trying to get destroyed. Marcus Garvey knew that and brought forth some of the greatest strides in black history. Marcus Garvey established; Universities, A newspaper corporation that was distributed throughout the world, ship lines, a corporation for stocks, stores and restaurants, fleet of trucks and a hotel which were all black owned and operated. To know black history is to know Marcus Garvey and that will lead us mindfully to pursue a rightful future.
