#REPOST @alesso.ross with @get_repost__app Do you even cardio #1 🏅 - Im sure we’ve all been told at least once how ‘shyt’ cardio is, or how cardio isn’t required if your busting your ass off weight training. Sadly, this creates a notion where people are refraining from cardio for fears of become weak, skinny, etc. You probably don’t even realise that cardio is an abbreviation of cardiovascular fitness 😋 - No, cardio isnt shyt nor a waste of time. In fact the aerobic system is responsible for replenishing creatine phosphate and ATP. So if you want to do better in the gym, if you want to be able to work at higher volumes, if you want to be able to recover faster between sets, you have to have a really good aerobic system. - And this goes back to the physiology; coaches and trainers aren’t learning these kinds of formalities. Which, obviously, are important and conducive to improved performance in their clients. What you actually want to achieve is a high VO2 max (maximum amount of oxygen that an individual can utilise during intense, or maximal exercise) whilst still maintaining your muscle mass and still being able to grow. This can be easily achieved through a steady block of aerobic activity. Because once there, it actually doesn’t require a lot to maintain the VO2 max at that level. - What about cardio inhibiting your muscular gains? Yeah of course it will if you overdo it. But it’s in a dose-dependent manner; if you go out and run three 30-40mins per week, that isn’t going to be limiting your muscular growth. Researchers have not found yet how exactly stress can be related to the incidence of cardiovascular diseases such as ( heart attack, sudden death, angina and decrease heart function). Stress itself might indeed be a risk factor, or it could be that high levels of stress make other risk factors worse (cholesterol, hypertension). If stress itself is a risk factor for heart disease, it could be because chronic stress exposes your body to unhealthy, persistently elevated levels of stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. Some studies also linked stress to the way blood clots which increases the risk of heart attack and pulmonary embolism. Managing your stress level is very important. For me, physical activity is my number one stress relief activity. ** EATING FOR YOUR GENETICS ** . . Your genes are your genes and there’s nothing you can do about it.... right?! . . NOPE 👩🏼‍🔬 . . ‘Epigenetics’ basically means ‘above genetics’, it’s the practice of implementing nutrition and lifestyle practices which alter the expression of your genes. . . The fact that I lean towards fatty fish over meat as my source of protein is not just a personal preference. I’m specifically eating for my genetics. . . I have the APOE4 gene which predisposes me to a greater risk of Alzheimer’s and cardiovascular disease. . . Folks with this gene are ‘high responders’ when it comes to saturated fats. That doesn’t mean I avoid them all together, they are, of course, essential. . . Having inadequate levels of cholesterol is associated with just as high risk factors as high Lipoprotein(a) - a crucial marker for the risk of developing heart disease. . . However, I do lean towards food high in mono and polyunsaturated fats (omega 3’s) for my sources of protein and fat. Ie fatty fish, olives, avocado, nuts and seeds. These anti-inflammatory fats are better suited to my genetics. . . It’s important to note that saturated fat is not the ‘bad guy’ when it comes to cardiovascular disease. Reducing your intake of hydrogenised trans fats (polyunsaturated oils that have been exposed to a high heat) and refined carbohydrates is the best thing you can do for your heart and overall health. . . Aside from avoiding processed foods, nutrition and lifestyle hacks are not all black and white. Perhaps time to explore your genetics?! I highly recommend running a @23andme test and using @gensmartme to make sense of the data. 👩🏼‍🔬
