Sorry for the gloomy photo, but this is bedtime. Introducing Gerald the plush gecko, Dolly’s new roost buddy. Dolly hasn’t wanted to go to bed since she’s been on her own. Titch used to go to bed first, but would pop in and out of the coop warbling gently to Dolly until she joined her. Having seen so many of you using fluffy toys with your chicks, we thought we’d give it a go. Knowing how Dolly likes to lick everything, we decided a lot of fluff might be a bad idea (fur balls!). So we found Gerald. Dolly got to know him during the day when he appeared at all her regular haunts. She didn’t seem to mind him at all. The first night she found him in the coop, in Titch’s place, she clucked at him, and settled about six inches away. This photo is from the second night. She hopped straight up and cuddled against him.
Now, it’s very possible that I’m finding Gerald more reassuring than Dolly. But he’s made me feel so much better, knowing that she’s not on her own out there. Welcome to the family, Gerald. -
