Flashback to 3 years ago. The day we brought our first 3 chicks home. I was in love! This is little sweet Chickpea, she was literally the most inquisitive and friendly people chicken I’d ever met, she would always snuggle up and immediately jump onto our shoulder as soon as we walked into the coop. She didn’t like to leave our side. To our heartbreak, she only lived to be 3 months old. She passed away from what we think may have been parasite, but could have been sour crop, cocci, or a whole slew of other issues. We weren’t “chicken people” then, we thought we were but we weren’t. We had no clue, we just knew something was wrong and we took her to the vet but it was too late. I sometimes think back and wonder that if I had known then what I know now, would sweet Chickpea still be with us? Who knows. But, I do know I’ve learned a HUGE amount about chicken keeping since then. I’ve learned to see things sooner, to treat them, when it’s time to go to a vet, and that chickens are incredibly good at hiding illness. We miss you, Chickpea ❤️❤️ thank you for teaching me to be a better chicken mom.
