When we were tossing around the ideas of 🐓 Jason was totally NOT on board. I wanted them for years and the reason we got them was a cute little note from Liam begging for chicks. We werent exactly EDUCATED on what we were jumping into...but Here's my big takeaway: Backyard Chicken Eggs are the best because Happy Chickens=Incredible Eggs. Eggs are like the most accessible Superfood there is. AAAAAMAZING for your body. I really wasn’t an “egg researcher” prior to getting chickens. So...here’s what I wish I would’ve known:
If you still buy your eggs from the store, here's a pretty basic description of what the labels mean:
🐥No Label: They live in tiny cages surrounded with their own filth, no sun/fresh air.
🐔Cage Free: This means they dont live in a cage, but in overcrowded barns, no sun, no fresh air.
🐣Free Range: Same living quarters as cage free, except they have "access to outdoors" (i.e. a tiny door to a tiny space outside that 99% of chickens never find due to overcrowding.)
🌱Vegetarian: Very controversial because Chickens are Omnivores--they need plant & animal protein.
🐛Pasture Raised: This is what you want. Chickens who are allowed to LIVE outside as Often as they want and forage for food.
Within one month I will be eating eggs from the chickens that Liam wakes each morning, Hillary hand feeds each afternoon, Rylan puts to sleep each night and that I hold/pet daily. These chickens are loved and happy.
I would encourage you to reach out to your friend who has chickens, talk and see if it's a good fit for your fam--if it's not, see if they want to sell you some eggs 🙂 Most have lots of extras due to #chickenmath and will sell for a reasonable price-probably cheaper than your local store would sell Brown eggs and you get to meet the Hen/see how she lives.
