@ is an actor and dancer best known for his roles as Mike Chang on the long-running hit TV show, Glee, and @’s warlock Magnus Bane, a character who identifies as bisexual. Born in Costa Rica to Chinese parents, Shum grew up in the San Francisco area. Like Mike Chang, he fell into dancing “accidentally” when, on a dare, he auditioned for his high school dance team. There, he discovered his passion and dancing’s appeal. “We did dances to songs by @, and girls would scream,” Shum said. He got his start in a series of iPod commercials and as a backup dancer for @, @, and @. Eventually he’d appear in dance films You Got Served, Stomp the Yard, and Step Up 2 (working for the first time with @ director @) before taking on the role of football-player-turned-dancer Mike Chang. This summer he made a brief yet significant appearance in Crazy Rich Asians (signalling perhaps a larger role in the movie’s sequel). Last night he won the @ Award for Male TV Star of the Year for his role as Magnus.
