Christmas tree worm (Spirobranchus giganteus) have multicolored crowns that look like christmas trees! They use these structures for feeding and respiration. The brightly colored radioles filter microorganisms from the water, which are then deposited straight into the worm's mouth! When fish or other predators come close they retract these spiral formations as you can see in the video! _ _ #scuba #diving #scubadiving #hawaii #bahamas #worm #christmastreeworm #lx10 #nauticam #panasonic #underwater #finalcut #lightroom #scubapro

#Spirobranchusgiganteus Also known as "Christmas Tree Worm" for its appearance. They build a calcium carbonate tube on corals in which they live their entire life, meaning they are sedentary organisms. .... When startled, this organisms retract rapidly into their burrows (CaC tube) hiding from would-be predators. .... This weeks fishy Friday photo is not technically a fish but a worm - a Christmas tree worm. The main body of the worm is burrowed into the coral beneath and the Christmas tree like appendages visible are used for respiration and feeding. When approached the Christmas tree part will usually retract into the burrow below making them difficult to photograph. Thanks to Roger Lacasse for this great shot. If you have a favourite underwater photo taken during a stay at Coral Paradise Resort Bonaire, share with us and you may see it featured here. #bonaire #uwphoto #christmastreeworm #bonairebluedestination #wehavethebestguestsintheworld #coralparadiseresortbonaire

Christmas tree worms, Spirobranchus giganteus, are Christmasexternal link tree-shaped serpulidexternal link tube-dwelling worms with magnificent twin spirals of plumes used for feeding and respiration. These cone-shaped worms are one of the most widely recognized sedentary polychaete wormsexternal link. They come in many colors including orange, yellow, blue, and white and, though they are small with an average 3.8external link cm in span, they are easily spotted due to their shape, beauty, and color. The colorful plumes, or tentacles, are used for passive feeding on suspended food particles and plankton in the water. The plumes are also used for respiration. Though the plumes are visible, most of these worms are anchored in their burrows that they bore into live calcareous coral. Christmas tree worms are very sensitive to disturbances and will rapidly retract into their burrows at the slightest touch or passing shadow. They typically re-emerge a minute later, very slowly, to test the water before fully extending their plumes. #christmastreeworm #coral #reef #underwaterphotography #underwater #coralreef #submarinismo #snorkling #scubadiving #scuba #manado #northsulawesi #spirobranchusgiganteus #christmas #cristmastree #ocean #sea #buceo #arrecifes #gills #worms #macro #macrophotography #indonesia

looks like Christmas is coming early folks, check out these Christmas tree worms.🌲🐛 these annelids were found in the Laguna tide pools and can be overlooked if not looking closely enough. What’s makes them look like a Christmas tree is actually their “radioles”, appendages that help them breathe and eat little bits of food(typically plankton) in the water. Try not to startle the little guys, they retract quickly into their calcium carbonate tubes and it can be a bit before they come back out. 👀 look closely next time you’re out there and see if you can spot a few!🤙🏼🌊 . . . #shadesofblueconservancy #tidepooling #lagunabeach #annelids #invertebrate #education #MPA #lagunaMPA #protectourcoasts #marinescience #intertidal #funfacts #christmastreeworm #marineworms

I've decided today is invertebrate Wednesday! So here are some the amazing invertebrates that live in the aquarium. From a smol (it's a technical term, I promise) shrimp, to a literal giant pacific octopus; delicate christmas tree worms and, to marine hermit crabs; stealthy hunter mantis shrimp, to passive filter feeder strawberry anemone. #aquarium #invertebrate #invertebratesofinstagram #invertebrateappreciation #giantpacficoctopus #octopus #cephalopod #hermitcrab #crustacean #christmastreeworm #shrimp #anemone #mantisshrimp #fisharefriends #omahazoo #scottaquarium

A Christmas Tree Worm. This tiny little animal has two Christmas tree like structures mainly for filtering the water for plankton and respiration. In the series of strange but fascinating ocean creatures let me introduce to you the funky christmas tree worms! If you go too close they will freak out and recede back into their holes faster that you blink your eye, but after a while they'll come back out for you to admire 😍 #christmastreeworm #oceancreatures #greatbarrierreef #underwaterphotography

Each worm has two brightly colored crowns that protrude from its tube-like body. These Christmas tree-like crowns are composed of radioles, or hair-like appendages radiating from the worm’s central spine. These appendages are used for respiration and to catch dinner, which typically consists of microscopic plants, or phytoplankton, floating in the water. These worms are sedentary, meaning that once they find a place they like, they don’t move much. In fact, while the colorful crowns of these worms are visible, most of their bodies are anchored in burrows that they bore into live coral. When startled, Christmas tree worms rapidly retract into their burrows, hiding from would-be predators. #christmastreeworm #christmas #reef #coral #reeflife #oceanlife #uwphotography #underwater #olympus #gopro #rescuediver #scubadiving #scuba #dive #diving #caribbean #colour #padi #paditv @paditravel @paditv #macro #macrolife #macrophotography

Day 6 - Hairy. - The Christmas tree worm is a polychaete, “polychaete” being Greek for “with much hair”. Polychaetes are known for having many bristly hairs all along their bodies, but this Christmas tree worm is particularly hairy on top, too! They live happily burrowed inside corals in shallow, tropical waters in pairs and their hairy tentacles catch plankton and other small particles that may flow in their path. Burrowing into coral, they create a calcium carbonate tube which they use to retract into when threatened. - Whilst not listed as a threatened species, global warming and ocean acidification (specifically the reduction of calcium carbonate minerals) might be their demise. If you’ve not watched Chasing Coral, I strongly suggest you do - it’s on Netflix and the link is in my bio! 🌊 🌍

I have a new love for Christmas Tree Worms! They are such beautiful and amazing animals👌🌊 The worm has hair-like appendages sticking out which gives it its Christmas Tree look. They use these appendages for respiration and feeding. Most of their bodies are anchored in burrows inside of live coral and they can retract their whole body into the burrow if they feel threatened! They belong to the Polycheates, which are marine segmented worms. #scubadiving #marinebiology #christmastreeworm #invertebratesarecool #greatbarrierreef #grubreef #tropicalqueensland #saveouroceans

Christmas Tree Worms ⠀ Do you like worms as much as I do? If you twisted your faces in disgust 🤢, you don’t know all truth about these beautiful creatures! ⠀ Not all the worms are slimy and disgusting. Christmas Tree Worm is a real fashion designer in the world of worms. Don’t afraid, they won’t turn your Christmas Tree 🎄 into some modern art masterpiece. They are Christmas trees by themselves 🤯 ! ⠀ Christmas tree worms are sea creatures whose colourful spiral tentacles look like Christmas trees. These tentacles are used to capture plankton and to breath! When divers see them for the first time, they may think by mistake that it's a mysterious underwater plant 🌿. But it's a visible part of the worm! ⠀ Christmas tree worms start their life with a short larval phase. It only lasts for a few hours. The larva worms live in open water and feed only on plankton. After settling down on a coral, the adult phase starts by digging inside and building their home tube. However, their activity is not harmful to corals. On the contrary, they have symbiotic relationships. Worms can protect the corals from invasive sea stars like the crown of thorns sea star and also preventing the overgrowth of algae. ⠀ Hope this story was interesting and you have what to share with family 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦and friends during the next Christmas Eve. Let me know in comments if you want to hear more about tiny sea creatures like Christmas tree worms and nudibranchs, or you prefer big fish 😉 ⠀ #underwaterphotography #christmas #christmastree #christmastreeworm #scuba #diving #scubadiving

It's always Christmas with these worms. While they normally live for 10 to 20 years a Christmas tree worm can live up to 30! Just like their age there's more than meets the eye as 2/3 of the worm is inside is calcium carbonate to below the surface.⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ Video: @akvaplant ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #tube #worm #tubeworm #xmas #christmas #Christmastree #christmastreeworm #water #ocean #waterlogged #scicomm #WissKomm #waterlogd #wow #cool #colorful #inverts #polychaete #sealife #sgiganteus #beautiful #mustsee
