Hi, this is SOFIA (@hy)
☀ ☀ Most of the time: Photographer, photography writer
☀ Occasionally: Jewelry designer, kids’ apparel creator, Georgian cuisine ambassador
☀ Always: Lover of coffee dates, travel enthusiast, dreamer of new creative endeavors
☀ Number of kids: 2 ☀
☀ In June of 2006, I packed my suitcases to move over 6,000 miles away from my hometown in Georgia (Eastern Europe) to the heart of the United States. Over the next decade, my husband and I would navigate three countries and four states, graduate grad schools, achieve scientific accomplishments and engage in international development work. Most importantly, we would experience the birth of our two amazing daughters.
☀ The journey brought joys, but it also inspired soul searching, inner restlessness, and a desire for creative outlets. This need wasn’t new, but my developing life as a stay-at-home mom (with newfound time on one hand, and a lack of a social/professional life on the other) led me to explore art forms I’d never tried before. Jewelry-making, wire-weaving, needle-tatting, sewing, painting—I was always experimenting—but
nothing was stirring my heart.
☀ Then I picked up a camera. Capturing emotion through photography was the creative purpose I was seeking. For the first time, I felt I’d found my artistic path. ☀
☀ Only one thing was missing: a supportive community to share my passion—a seemingly impossible dream. As if by magic, I also met my tribe—the MatriArtists. I’m now blessed with a tight-knit circle of talented and creative friends, with whom I share my dreams, aspirations and achievement as well as setbacks and fears. These are my people.
