One year ago. One year ago I had my first spinal surgery. 9 weeks later I ruined it and had the second one a short three months after the first. I wasn't sure if I would ever recover fully. Having been an athlete my whole life, being injured, unable to stand up without excruciating pain, was the most physically, mentally and emotionally exhausting thing I'd ever gone through.
Today, I got back on the wall for the first time alone. I did my best.. I crushed a 5.7..5.8.. couldn't finish a 5.9+.. a year without climbing is a huge set back however this time last year I wasn't sure I'd ever be able to climb again.
I'm so thankful for the medical professionals that took away my pain. I'm grateful to my friends and family that took care of me after the surgeries and I'm grateful to @tommycaldwell @kjorgeson and @senderfilms for putting The Dawn Wall film together. I went to the premiere last night and was reminded for two hours straight how much I love climbing, how freeing it can be, and how nothing will stop you unless you let it. It's all a choice.
