Behind the Stick with @mercado_de_flores of @wolfandcranebar
I first met Karla, pretty recently, at a pop-up event at @stephenkennstudio where she was Behind the Stick making amazing Mezcal drinks! After the event a group of us ended up going out ... Shenanigans happened , I blame it on @thecocktailportal 😉
Regardless, I immediately knew Karla and I would be friends ... she’s got this contagious positive energy that draws you in. She’s fierce, kind, creative and most importantly cares about it all.
Let’s dig a bit deeper with the industry gem
How did you get into the industry? My mother is an amazing cook and my family has been making/ selling tamales all my life. Coming to America and being an immigrant family, I started working very young, helping them wrap tamales or cut the vegetables or chilis as well as selling them. With my ma's hard work she eventually owned a restaurant and had a few food trucks. The work ethic I had growing up made me a natural leader and helped me appreciate the hospitality world and what it has to offer. I took in all my mothers techniques and knowledge and started creating drinks and now here I am
Any trends that your fond of / hate?
I love a hello when I walk into an establishment, I appreciate the trend of old music returning to our bars from Cumbias to jazz
