So, here's the bomb: communism in Albania. I just want to warn you first that everything I'm going to mention here is what I heard from locals, and sometimes is not historically accurate. In 1941 the Communist loyalist liberated the country from Italian Fascist invasion. The leader name was Enver Hoxha and it became an official dictadorship three years later, when he took total power. - First it had relations only with Yugulasvia, but soon Hoxha said its socialism wasn´t the pure one. After, it allied itself to URSS, but in the 1960s he said that Stalilism wasn't pure either. It then allied with China, but, guess what? It wasn't pure enought for Hoxha either. Therefore, the country completely isolated itself.
- During communist era, everyone had a work, but not everyone had something to do. It's said that communist regime hired 4 or 5 people to do the work of one, so it wouldn't have unemployment rate. - No moving was legal. If you are from one city, you stay there. If you try to escape the country and the government learn it, your whole family, until 3rd degree, will face punishments. When the borders were open in 1990s, many Albanians ran away. It contributed to the fact that nowadays there are more Albanians living outside Albania than in its borders - 6 millions expats x 3 million in land. - Everyone was received an amount of food per month. All levels of education were (and still are) for free. Health system was also universal and free.
- No private cars were allowed. Exactly, you couldn't buy a car until the 1990s. People joke that this is why Albanians are such bad drivers - they've driven for less than 30 years now. - There was one government channel of TV and radio, but people that lived in ther borders were able to catch the waves from Italian and Greek radios; this partially explains why these are the second and third languages most spoken in the country. - It was the first atheist country in the world and all religion were abolished - many mosques and churches were destroyed or used for something else.
