Most days, when we can, we visit one of my neighbours, just down the street. He loves seeing my dog, and it's such a joy to see his face light up every day to see her. Today he turned 102. How amazing is that - he always tells me he was blessed with good genes - I think it's also the way he is and has lived his life. He lost his wife quite young and he lost his eldest son last year. I know through his attitude and the way he simply keeps living and loving, he has been a great teacher to me. A beautiful man. Today he told me the 5 things he believes are essential for a life well lived.
1. Eat good food and drink good wine / 2. Find someone to love and don't tell them or expect them to change, just love them because they love you, for as long as you both live / 3. Don't obsess over things you can't change, let things happen, just as they do, as part of life and just keep carrying on / 4. Have a garden, or even just a plant, or a pet, something to water or tend to, something that needs you, and you have to look after other than just yourself, focus joyfully on that / 5. Every day, do one kind thing for someone else. Then you can go to sleep and rest, knowing you have done something good and meaningful. I said to him "I think I come here to see you for me, not just for you" and he said "You bless me, I bless you, that's how happiness works, and that's how simple life is". What beautiful life lessons I have learnt from him, and I pass on with love to you, today.
