One-time use is resource abuse. Plain and simple. These one-time use plastic items are, in fact, NOT anywhere near biodegradable or compostable. They will sit in the ground (landfill or environment) and break up into millions of tiny pieces over time. Breaking DOWN is something an organic material does - wood, hair, beeswax, tree sap, corn cobs, lettuce, pork, milk, bones, etc. These things came from nature and will return to nature. They don't need to be in a landfill, quarantined from the world, to be trapped for what may be generations and generations. They can be left out in the environment (compost pile), piled layer upon layer, and broken down quickly back into soil - usually within months. Compost actually is a hot-bed of life - filled with nutrients, insects and critters that improve soil health and are the exact ingredients for soil. Landfills are far from a compost pile. They are not treated as compost piles. So any organic matter sitting in a landfill (cardboard boxes, tissues, food scraps, 100% cotton clothing [think old jeans], etc.) will sit in among non-organic matter, without the necessary components of life that break-up organic matter back into soil. So stop putting organic matter into your garbage! Find a compost pile in your area, call your municipality for a city compost location (or suggest they start one) or start your own compost pile in your backyard. You can even compost materials on a small deck or patio via vermicomposting (check this process out!). And for goodness sake, STOP USING ONE-TIME USE PLASTIC! .
