If there is a person in the Caribbean fighting for the conservation of coral reefs it is my friend German Mendez from the island of Cozumel. Thanks to his Cozumel Coral Reef Restoration Program, many types of corals that have suffered for many years, from natural and human made causes, are starting to thrive again in many of the platforms German uses as nurseries. By collecting pieces of broken coral and replanting them in his structures, German and its team are working hard in protecting, cleaning and growing many of these coral colonies into healthy reefs so they can become what they originally were many decades ago.
The Cozumel Coral Reef Restoration Program is the perfect place for divers, nature lovers and scientists who want to learn more about the current problems, solutions and efforts being done to protect coral reefs in the Caribbean. If you want to know more about German’s project and be part of it, go to www.ccrrp.org or its facebook page @.ccrrp.org. It is a fun project, very educational and you will really enjoy it.
