What is it will Italians and peeping? So many films, it seems, set in small-town Italy involve some pervy guys—if not little boys—spying on bella donnas bathing, changing clothing, walking up ladders in short skirts… There’s usually some hole in the wall or binoculars or periscope… It’s a tradition, like Sunday ragu and Mama.
_ Messo Comunale Praticamente Spione_ AKA _ L'infermiera di campagna_ (English title: _Emanuelle in the Country_) falls in a set of Italian (or Latin? If we include Spanish) sex-comedy romps that Laura Gemser appeared in, beginning with D’Amato’s _Vow of Chastity_ (1976), then _Voglia di Donna_ (1978) and _The Periscope_ (1979). In all these, Laura’s darker complexion makes her stand out from the uniformly mono-ethnic cast remaining, while also serving as the focus of lustful attraction of the on-lookers. Italians also have a thing for “exotic” beauties, capisce?
Some fun things about this: Though the film appears to have received the date of 1982 (probably due to some wide or video release then?), it was actually completed by 1978. One can see how different the style of this “70s” movie is even from the early “80s” movies. Laura is still the head-turning chick, who will have sex with you as a simple favor; she has not turned yet into the deadly vengeful momma. The film contains several extended sex scenes, with a lot of contact between her and husband Gabriele Tinti. Awkwardly, she had to do the same type of scene with some young blonde stud. This is one of the smaller number of movies that puts Laura and Gabriele together but which is not directed by D’Amato. It’s directed by Mario Bianchi (as Alan W. Cools). Also pretty “Cool” is that it includes the infamous Mark Shannon! This was made before his hardcore movies with D’Amato (and in fact looks to be his first adult film role). Oddly, Bianchi made another film with Shannon—a hardcore porno—called by a title more or less identical to the present film: “La dottoressa di campagna” (1981).
