Insulin is an absolute must have for t1d. @ highlights new treads in insulin use for body building, what are your thoughts? ・・・
Yesterday during a call with @, she made me aware of a trend that I never knew about.
The use of insulin for bodybuilding. Some bodybuilders regularly take rapid acting insulin to promote muscle growth, increase stamina, improve endurance, and prevent the breakdown of muscle protein.
Now, I’ve heard of diabulimia (purposely using less insulin to lose weight), but it never occurred to me that someone would intentionally give themselves our life-saving drug, for aesthetics.
This concept is pretty ironic to me. For those who’s life depends on this drug - we live for the day that we don’t need these injections. With every meal, we pray that we didn’t miscalculate because an overdose can happen if we even give one unit too many. Parents lose sleep so they can check their child’s blood sugar 2-3 times every night, just to make sure they don’t go low overnight. To make sure that they will wake up in the morning.
Not only is it ironic, but this fad is extremely dangerous. Diabetic or not, low blood sugar kills. Too much insulin can lead to seizures, brain damage, and death. Insulin stays active in your body 5-7 hours, meaning sometimes you don’t see the lows coming - even when you think you’re in the clear. After years of these lows, your body can also become unaware, meaning you stop feeling hypoglycemia symptoms - making the lows all the more dangerous.
It’s disheartening to see our lifeline drug abused for this purpose, especially when so many diabetics face difficulty affording or obtaining it.
