Iv’e been asked a lot recently to give my thoughts on Carb Back loading (CBL) for athletes. ❗️What is it About? The main aim of this diet involves severely restricting carbohydrates until the evening. The suggestion is that insulin released during the day when consuming carbs inhibits fat loss and lean muscle mass gains. 🛑The Truth 1. Insulin is a storage hormone so yes it has a role in storing fat and glycogen but it also has a role in carbohydrate oxidation (breaking down carbs to produce fuel for energy) this is vital for athletes that exercise often x2 per day 2. After exercise the muscles are primed to take up glycogen or carbs to aid recovery, this is why Sports Dietitians recommend you recover within 30-60mins post exercise with 1g/kg carbs and 20-25g protein. Severely restricting carbs could impact on recovery and significantly impact on performance. 3. Restricting carbs in the day is likely to cause fluctuations in blood sugars which could affect energy levels, mood, cause cravings and affect sleep patterns. Sleep quality is extremely important for athletes and is linked to health and immunity. 4. The research Behind CBL is limited only to 2 studies that can’t be applied to the athlete population. Weight loss in these studies is also more likely as a result of calorie deficit rather than CBL itself which is true of many fad diets. 🍏Sports Dietitian Advice 🍅 If your trying to loose weight or improve body composition eat regularly, consume a healthy balanced diet and introduce a sensible caloric deficit while maintaining your protein intake within recommendations so that you don’t feel hungry and maintain your lean muscle mass and strength. Periodise your carbohydrate against your training - this is key! Seek advice from a qualified Sports Dietitian and don’t fall into the dreaded fad diet trap! Można dolać trochę więcej mleka jeśli wolicie mniej budyniową konsystencję. That doesn’t mean that whole wheat noodles aren’t healthy. They are higher in fiber and protein when compared to vegetable noodles. Made a creamy tomato and mushroom pasta for dinner tonight... without any cream 🍅😍 (much lower in fat and therefore energy) This is roughly what I did: • Fry onions, garlic and mushrooms in olive oil (olive oil is a monounsaturated fat, beneficial to heart health ❤️) • Add Cajun spice, cumin, paprika, oregano and mixed herbs (Try using herbs and spices to flavour foods instead of salt to help reduce our salt intake⬇️) • Add in tomato purée 🍅 and 0% fat natural yoghurt (Dairy products are an excellent source of calcium which is vital for the health of our bones and teeth, choose low fat options where possible) Replacing cream with natural yogurt gives a creamy texture for much less fat, and therefore energy, than cream • I used wholewheat pasta for extra fibre and b-vitamins 💩🌾 . . . I’ve had a busy few days and have another very busy day tomorrow 🐝💤 so really enjoyed sitting down to this after my run this evening 👟
