East End Victorians...
Strathcona, Vancouver's East End, is our city's oldest and most interesting neighbourhood.
It is home to a wide array of Victorian and Edwardian heritage houses, rowhouses and apartment buildings. Long considered Vancouver's most affordable neighbourhood, the East End was overwhelmingly the first place for poorer immigrants fresh off the boat or train to look for their first home in Vancouver and through most of its existence, Strathcona has been a fascinating, ever changing patchwork of ethnic enclaves. The East End was home to Vancouver's earliest Jewish neighbourhood, Vancouver's Chinatown and Japantown, Little Italy and the largely Black-identified Hogan's Alley. Scandinavians, Russians, Ukrainians, Yugoslavians, Arab Christians , and Newfoundlanders contributed to the cultural mix. Every one of Strathcona's houses have compelling stories to tell. Come hear some of them on one of my upcoming East End History Walks this February/ March season. For details concerning dates, times and costs, etc, please click on the link in my bio.
