The walls of Athens are covered in graffiti and tags. This one is a tribute to Loukanikos, known as one of the city’s “Riot Dogs”. During nearly all protests in Athens up ‘till 2012, the stray ran along with the people and barked at the Greek riot police. His name means “sausage”, because that was his favorite food, and so, the people would often give him sausages. In 2011, Loukanikos was featured in Time Magazine’s list of the top 100 most influential people. He died in 2014, at the age of 10. Most probably, some say, the tear gas and the kicks he got from the police severely damaged his health. In older pictures of the graffiti you can see the words “we were tear gassed together” (original: Τα δακρυγόνα μαζί τα φάγαμε), but apparently, that part is gone now.
