There are many reasons I love Australorp chickens. They lay well in the winter, they could care less when it gets really hot, and they are sweet and mellow. Our rooster, however is probably an Americauna. (He literally just showed up one day and we adopted him.) His offspring are beautiful. The hens are either black with what we like to call "whiskers" or poofy feathers around their cheeks) ond a beautiful silver gray. But they are turning out to be a pain in my rear. They are very flighty and tend to flutter out of the chicken run, even though their wings are clipped. They never go very far, but for safety's sake I continually have to put them back in the run. Perhaps as they fatten up this will become less of a problem. Anyway, here's a picture of one of those beautiful but naughty hens. May she develop some of her mama's mellow qualities.
