One of my ENTO students brought her axolotl, Dart, into lab today. What a chunky monkey! And look how it eats the worm!
These guys (Ambystoma mexicanum) are related to the tiger sals I post frequently on (Ambystoma mavortium). The paedomorph tigers are the equivalent to an axolotl! Axolotls will stay in this larval-looking stage for their entire lives, however. They can metamorphose, but it's extremely rare and usually in high-stress conditions. Axolotls are endemic to a small region in Mexico, and unfortunately, they are critically endangered in the wild. Such a cool sal!
