Pompeii and Herculaneum, and the discoveries of an ancient restaurant, vineyards, and wine shops. Herculaneum is preserved so much more than Pompeii, having been buried about 3x as deep under the ash. We are so lucky to be able to see this much detail about the lifestyle, it provides such a complete picture. -An ancient restaurant in Herculaneum. Pots in a countertop in a Herculaneum cafe. Romans usually didn't cook in the home, and Pompeii and Herculaneum both have multiple "fast food restaurants" among the preserved structures. -Vineyards at Pompeii with Vesuvius looming behind. Pompeii had very fertile soil, and the wine produced there today is very similar to that of the pre-eruption times. Archeologists have recovered wine jugs that have traces of the ancient wine, and have compared the two. -A shop in Herculaneum- check out the wine jugs and rack, and the original wood! I can't believe the wood remains. This shop would have sold wine and olive oil.
