SERIOUS "SHEET": Ensemble Studio Theater's world premiere production of Charly Evon Simpson's new play "Behind the Sheet" officially opened January 17 in New York City. Directed by Colette Robert, the searing drama takes a look at dark chapter in medical experimentation and is inspired by the career of J. Marion Sims -- the physician and plantation owner known as "the father of modern gynecology." Considered a pioneer for his vaginal repairing technique, Sims repeatedly used plantation slave women as gynecological guinea pigs in the south during the 1840s. Renowned as a confederate hero and a champion of women's health issues, a commemorative statue in his likeness was recently removed from New York's Central Park.
Named a New York Times "Critic'' Pick", "Behind The Sheet" stars Joel Ripka, Naomi Lorrain, Megan Tusing, Shawn Randall, Nia Calloway, Cristina Pitter, Amber Reauchean Williams and Jehan O. Young. (www.ensemblestudiotheatre.org, 866-811-4111)
