“[on the journey to the US] In some spots, you have to stop and wait. You can’t leave because there are federales. Hiding from the federales, I had to hide in mountain with my son, and sleep for two hours. The flies attacked us—we were allergic to the flies and mosquitos[…] We had to be totally quiet.” “How was it keeping your son quiet?” “I told him we were on an adventure. So, he liked it. You endure hunger. Thirst. You get dehydrated. Once, we walked for four hours, and you’re so dehydrated you want to faint. You’re carrying your baby, you’re carrying a suitcase with just the essentials.” As we talked, this young mother’s little boy explored the bus station, coming back periodically to hang on her knees and touch her face. The three-year-old is clearly an utter joy, a true wiggle-worm, and a bigtime TALKER. He wanted to go pee. He wanted to see what was outside. He was proud to identify, at his mother’s behest, the colors of each of the crayons I'd given him. He wanted to make me to make a drawing of him, with which he was immediately dissatisfied because I had forgotten to include the collar on his shirt. His mother answered his questions patiently and with careful attention, turning to him the way parents of toddlers often do—love and fatigue raw on her face. He made her laugh. Her son drew himself in green and his mother in pink. What if I had to keep little guy totally quiet for two full hours? What if my survival depended on it? When I said goodbye to them, he had just charmed an older women into giving him her entire bag of potato chips.

Mercedes fled El Salvador for the U.S. after she was threatened with violence and told she would "find my daughter in a body bag." She and her 16-year-old daughter were separated by U.S. authorities in mid-May, and were finally reunited in Corpus Christi Friday. Mercedes was released from an Austin-area detention center for women after convincing the government she had "credible fear" of torture and persecution back home. “We went through a ton of stuff [un montón de cosas].” “Like what?” “Immigration wanted to grab us.” “…Can you tell me the story?” “We went over a mountain…” “And then?” “I’m a little shy to talk.” “I understand…How did you feel?” “Well—nervous!” “But it went well, right? You’re here! With your dad, thank God. And we’re glad you’re here.” “Thank you.” “So on your journey, what else happened? You walked a lot?” “Like for five hours!” “And what did you see?” “Rabbits. Snakes!” This twelve-year-old guy just crossed over on foot from America, and now he’s waiting for a bus north. He has incredible eyes—so bright and liquid, intense in their gaze. It’s easy to imagine them on a scary, intense, thrilling journey, sucking up every bit of the changing landscape, the people, the wildlife. He’s clearly one of those kids whose wheels are always turning. But when I took his picture, I asked to see his hands, which he offered to me palms up. I’ve talked to a number of folks here—lawyers, child advocates, respite workers—who agreed that showing children’s faces in photos—even after they are reunited with their parents, is probably not a good idea. This made sense to me, because many asylum seekers are fleeing violence in their home countries, and it’s easy for abusers and gangs to find people on the internet these days. But the advocates, lawyers, and respite workers I talked to introduced another reason not to show people’s faces, or to reveal their destinations in the US: because if we identify them, and reveal where they are going, people there—US citizens-- might want to find them, too. And not to welcome them. (Continued in comments)

Efrén Olivares, a director with the Texas Civil Rights Project, has spent the past month and a half working for parents whose children were taken from them after crossing the US/Mexico border—including a father and toddler separated just last week—AFTER the executive order that was supposed to end family separation. Efrén is also the father of a nearly eighteen-month-old son, who wiggles in his arms while we chat. They’ve just spent the morning reading stories and ‘cooking’ together with a toy kitchen. “About two weeks after this crisis started, my son started part-time preschool. [my wife] took him, and about an hour after she left, she had to go pick him up-- they lasted one hour without seeing each other. That was a very clear indication of how this must be for parents who not only are apart from the children, but don’t know what they are, don’t know what conditions they’re in, or when they’re going to see them again. They keep asking ‘When? When?’. And I have no answers for them”. It’s so much. The toddler just taken from her father last week is so close in age to Efrén’s own child. Officials say that the man cannot prove parentage of his daughter, even though he has the child’s birth certificate, and sources in their home country confirm the relationship. The family speaks little Spanish—they speak the indigenous language Mam—and his daughter is unable to communicate with her caregivers, or understand where her father is. He’s the only one she can talk to, and she doesn’t know where he went. They’re going to try and facilitate a three-way phone call so that father and daughter can speak-- hopefully tomorrow. “There’s not time to stop and cry about it. I have, a few times, but I’ve gotta keep going. Because every day that goes by it’s one more night that they’re sleeping without their parents. I ask the moms, ‘have you been able to talk to your sons or daughters?’ They tell me, ‘Well, we tried, but we couldn’t talk because they were just crying on the phone: ‘Mommy, why did you leave me? Why won’t you come get me?’”

SUNDAYS No morning hugs, No family brunch, No messy rooms No sunday roast, No shopping mall outings, No mother daughter coffee date, No afternoon shared sunny day, No kitchen meal prep at end of weekend. No more stories of the night before. No more children laughing or chatting. No more goodnight kisses. Sundays in the empty nest. For those that complain about a house full of laughter, love, mess & kids. This is what is no longer, in an empty nest. This is my new life, in the country with cows as neighbours & surrounded by peace. A life my children have chosen not to be part of, or spend a days drive to visit an hour out of the city. We all know how hectic life can get, but one days drive into the country, I promise will be full of pure bliss. Take the time to visit loved ones, or call them, or tell them you love them. For tommorrow may never arrive to visit, it may be to late to spend the last Sunday with eachother. #sundays #weekend #emptynest #startingover #separation #familyseparation #family #divorce #conflict #reality #confronting #relationships #thisislife #tornfamily #livelife #mylife #changes #newday #newchapter #countrylife #trustyourjourney #enjoyliving #blog #5yearswaiting #pathtohappiness #weekenddrive #sundaydrive #ichoosepeace

Last week, we reported on the story of Yeni Gonzalez Garcia, a Guatemalan mother separated from her children at the southern border. She was detained in Arizona and her children sent to foster care here in NYC. After a WNYC listener heard her story, her bond was crowdfunded online and she was able to be released from detention. But after a long journey from Arizona, she was only allowed to visit her children in foster care. Finally on Friday afternoon, she was able to get full custody of her children again. "I want to send a message to all those moms. Keep fighting, because with the help of all these people and with the help of God you're going to achieve what you want," Gonzalez Garcia said in spanish during a press conference. Click the link in our bio to hear what the next steps are for her and her children and how other separated families are dealing with the reunification process. 📸: Mary Altaffer/AP Photo.

A little late getting started in my reading... #antiracistbookclub Affirming/enraging: prologue mentions shifting demographics in US, since 1950s the country was 90% white, now is growing at 90% folks of the Global Majority. I am reminded that underlying the #muslimban, #guantanamobay revival, #familyseparation and #zerotolerance targeting Central Americans is the white supremacist fear of losing power in a land we are squatting on.

Beyond this barrier, past the rows of parked cars, held inside this converted Walmart about the length of a city block, there are between 1000 and 1500 detained children. This is Casa Padre, one of the country's biggest contract holding facilities for immigrant children, some of those recently taken from their parents while seeking asylum at the border. Inside, a team of lawyers inside were on their second day of interviewing the kids held here in hopes of assessing their living conditions and perhaps reuniting them with their families. I’ve heard the lawyers were given exactly 48 hours of access—no more. This is a working strip mall, so there was a Chico’s women’s fashion store just behind me, and a pizza place. It was totally quiet outside Casa Padre except for a few security guards, and I didn’t have a camera lens wide enough to take in the entire structure in a single photo. I certainly couldn’t hear any children's voices from that far away. They were all likely indoors anyway--by most accounts, the kids are allowed about two hours of outside time per day. They attend half-days of school inside the detention center. They watch movies, eat, play, and sleep. (Continued in comments)

It can be hard for recently arrived immigrants to talk about the journey they’ve endured, but they’re often generous enough to describe how they’re feeling physically, and bodies are wonderful storytellers so long as you don’t deduce too much. After traveling hundreds and hundreds miles with her father, mostly on foot, this thirteen-year-old was so hoarse from coughing that she couldn’t speak much above a whisper. Respiratory problems are a very common ailment among children after crossing, along with rashes and stomach problems (maybe from drinking contaminated water, maybe from stress). She was almost too shy to have her photo taken, but then she changed her mind, smiling shyly and motioning for me to come back over. She clutched her father’s hand tightly toward the camera, and that’s when I noticed her fingernails: she’d managed to keep them absolutely on point for the whole journey-- perfect ovals, not a single one broken. When I pointed this out, her smile widened. Teenagers are the best.

I am always focusing on what future impact these current actions will take form as for our Brown/Black communities going thru these hate filled laws. What trauma will these children/parents/refugees have to live with? How will the actions of these traumatized people effect not only them but their families, neighborhoods, cities and the society as a whole? What laws and repression tactics will police and the court system create to “deal” with those traumatize POC and then place blame on them when it was this system and gov that did it to us in the first place?? SIGH. In addition listen to @inthethickshow always, they are great. #Repost @inthethickshow with @get_repost ・・・ We've seen the crying and suffering of children being torn apart from their parents at the U.S. border, but what is happening in these kids' brains and what is the neurological impact of trauma? @maria_la_hinojosa calls up a badass neuroscientist from @ucla, Dr. Gina Poe, to understand the science behind the trauma of #FamilySeparation Stay tuned when we drop the episode in just a few on #ApplePodcasts or wherever you get your podcasts! #supportbrownpodcasts #poc #KeepFamiliesTogether

@jakebiderman reports: Images and audio clips coming out of detention centers near the United States’ southern border sparked outrage last month after the Department of Homeland Security revealed that government agents had separated approximately 2,000 children from their parents. The families were separated while trying to illegally cross the border between April 19 and May 31 as a consequence of President Donald Trump’s “zero tolerance” policy, which refers all illegal immigrants for criminal prosecution. In the weeks since the news broke, several high-profile Jewish organizations have pushed back against the policy in a number of ways. Some have written letters to the Attorney General and begun online petitions; others have participated in protests and visited migrant shelters across the border. The country is eagerly watching to see if and how the issue is resolved. #familyseparation #jewishactivism #border #ICE #jewishmagazines #jewishmagazine #jewishjournalism #journalist #journalism #socialactivism #politicalactivism

On this day, 13 July 1976, a team of Uruguayan and Argentinian soldiers kidnapped Uruguayan anarchist Sara Méndez and her friend. She woke up in a government torture camp, and was unable to track down her missing infant son. Her son had been taken from her and was put up for adoption, and they were not reunited until 2002. As the decision to extend, redesignate or terminate #TPS for #Somalia nears, we are reminded that what’s at stake is another #FamilySeparation crisis. TPS recipients — parents to 273,000 U.S.-born children — face the impossible decision of taking their children to countries racked with violence and instability, countries these children have never known OR being indefinitely separated from their children and the lives they’ve worked so hard to build here. At a recent summit on TPS #AIJustice Family Defense Program Director Adonia Simpson spoke alongside partner organizations about the catastrophic effects terminating TPS is already having here in South Florida. #SaveTPS #FamiliesBelongTogether 🇺🇸⚖️
