What the heck is a macro? . This is a question I get a LOT...so I want to take a few minutes to educate you! . Macronutrients “aka macros” are the molecules our bodies need to grow and be active. We use them for energy, which furthermore aids in the breakdown of nutrients, helps repair damaged cells and grow new cells, and so much more. . Macros are divided into 3 main categories: carbohydrates, protein, and fat . My favorite move from this week's #FASTerWaytoFatLossVIP legday workout is the Step Up with Reverse Lunge. This is such a killer move to strengthen and sculpt the entire leg! And you get the bonus of a little cardio and balance training. It can be executed with or without weights though I always recommend getting comfortable with any move without weights before adding them. The ideal height for step ups is one that keeps the front knee at or close to a 90° angle. A lower step is fine to start with. Increase the height as you build confidence and strength. Take your time and be intentional with each part of this move and make sure to maintain proper form throughout. Keep your core engage, step firmly and fully onto the step and move purposely to stay well balanced. Step up and forward on the front leg. Tap with the other leg, or for a bigger challenge bring the knee up, then step back down and into a nice deep reverse lunge. This is so true! We are all so encouraging to other people everyday, whether we are moms, dads, best friends, etc, we do a lot of the heavy lifting for other people in our lives. It is so important to find “you” time for many reasons, but the biggest is to not burn out. Lifting yourself up when you are down does not have to be done alone. Find someone that can lift you up and learn to accept help. I know that’s hard for a lot of people, me included, but I wouldn’t be where I am today without help. Thank you to all the amazing people I have in my life to keep lifting me up everyday! 😘

Dinner at my house is a little out of the ordinary...2 of us are meat eaters + 2 of us are not! I am not a planner...and I am not the most organized human being… but I am learning that having a layout of meal ideas for the week sets me up for success! How I Plan My Life, Work, & Homeschool (AKA my @emilyley problem) 🤓 . Since it’s Sunday & a planning day for many, I thought I’d share how I plan to plan in 2019 😉. First, I have a serious Simplified Planner problem! I love Emily Ley’s products so much because they are SIMPLE, BEAUTIFUL, and EFFECTIVE...and I need all 3 of those things in my life! . The first planner is the 2019 Weekly Edition in Blue Tile. I use this planner for my personal/family schedule. The compact size is easy to take with me, and the space is just right for activities & appointments. . The next planner is the 2019 Daily Planner in Watercolor Floral (which I got for a great price on Cyber Monday 🙌). I’ll use this planner for my FASTer Way to Fat Loss® coaching work 🤗. It has tons of space each day to plan rounds, posts, meal plans, and workouts. I cannot wait to start the new year with this!! 💪 . The open planner is the Academic Weekly Planner in Mint Pineapple. I use this for my homeschool planning & I LOVE it!! I’ve tried numerous other teacher planners, but they never provide the space I need for 4 kids. I’ve divided the daily planner into 4 sections, one for each student, and I can use the top for morning time and the bottom for notes. What is the Pelvic Floor and Why Does it Matter for You? How Does Pregnancy Affect the Pelvic Floor? . See video in my IGTV or Facebook —> @patti.holsenback . Simply put - the pelvic floor is a series of muscles hanging out like a hammock at the bottom of your pelvis. . What are its functions? . First, the PF control your pelvic openings - the urethra (for urine), the vagina, and the anus (for poop). The PF muscles are responsible for opening and closing these openings at the right time, for the right reasons. If they're not working correctly, you may end up with incontinence (wetting your pants unexpectedly). . Second, the PF acts as support for the pelvic organs - your bladder, uterus, and rectum. The PF is responsible for holding these organs in place and not letting them slip down into each other or into the vagina (which is called a prolapse). . Third, the PF assist is breathing and pressure management. . The PF relaxes and drops when you inhale, and then rebounds back up as you exhale. If the PF is not going through the full range of motion on each breath, you will not be managing that intra-abdominal pressure as well as you could be. . If the Pelvic Floor is NOT functioning well for a long enough time - you could develop some issues. It's best to get evaluated by a Pelvic Floor Physical Therapist if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms. . Incontinence, Prolapse, Painful Sex, Constipation, Back Pain. All of these can be related to Pelvic Floor Dysfunction. . Now, you might start thinking... well I wet my pants when I jump, so I must have a weak PF. I need to strengthen it - let's do kegels! . Not so fast. Yes, your PF muscles may need to be strengthened. BUT they may actually be TOO STRONG... too tight.. too tense... already. In that case, strengthening exercises like kegels, might actually cause your symptoms to increase. . Continued in comments! I need to make this a blog post 😆

This is one of the things I love most about the FASTer Way to Fat Loss® program: the emphasis on rest! As a former competitive athlete, we worked out under the harshest conditions. I remember swimming outdoors during the winter when the pool heater was broken while on antibiotics for a sinus infection. There was no rest. So thought most of my adult life, I’d push myself to do more when I was exhausted or sick. But FWTFL stresses the importance of giving your body time to rest and not feeling guilty about it. The other night I didn’t sleep more than 5 hours, so yesterday, I did not do my leg day workout. I’m not feeling guilty about it because I’ll do it later today. . I’ll be honest, I get maybe 4 workouts in per week if I’m lucky. Some I can’t finish because it’s getting late. With working full time and being a mom, I don’t always (aka never) have the luxury of time. Despite that, by making a concerted effort to focus on my nutrition, I still lost 13 lbs, nearly 6 inches and went down a dress size (back to my normal size). . Sundays are for recovery and repair…sometimes I choose to the take the day off completely and sometimes I have an active recovery day, like I did today. After my leg workout yesterday I NEEDED yoga! It felt so good to stretch with 80 other yogis. Even the kids got in on the action with a kids yoga class! . . The FASTer Way to Fat Loss® has opened my eyes to how important rest is and how much our bodies need it…. Working out too much is counterintuitive to fat loss and achieving our goals. . I’e also learned that exercise is not a punishment for what you ate or drank the day before…. I still live life and enjoy my favorite foods and drinks but no longer feel guilty about it. . I love carbs... all carbs....I don’t discriminate 😉 But something that truly shocked me, when I began tracking my food and bringing more awareness to the break down of carbohydrates, fats and proteins in each meal, is that I was consistently struggling to hit my carbohydrate goals. What the??!! It quickly became clear that when I am eating real, whole foods, I do not need to be afraid to EAT! And neither do you! There are still days where I find myself shy on carbohydrates and on those days, like this morning, I treat myself to some organic maple syrup in my coffee. If you have never tried this, YOU MUST!! Gone will be the days of using processed white sugar. The #FWTFL food plan is not a deprivation approach. You will eat a TON of delicious, real, wholesome food. You will feel satisfied and proud of yourself for taking hold of your health. Schedule your workouts in everyday - literally write them in your planner. FASTer Way to Fat Loss® coaches: Same to you about meal planning, prepping, and workouts. Do this power hour today. Put your phone up and crank this out: 20 minutes - Follow up with message you’ve received, check on your waiting list, reach out. 30 minutes - Make a list of content ideas and write one VALUABLE post for each day this week. 10 minutes - Grab your partner, a friend, or a tripod, find good lighting, and take some photos of yourself. Mix it up and take A LOT. After your power hour spend just a few minutes finalizing your personal planner - remember, we plan family time FIRST! Okay!! Let’s do this!! A little throwback to 2016 to remind me how much easier meal planning and grocery shopping is now 😂. . Meal planning can be a huge pain for a lot of us. When you’re juggling your family, work commitments, crazy school & sports schedules, creating and sticking to a meal plan can seem ridiculous. I encourage my clients to pick a time each week to dedicate to meal planning and planning out groceries. It's also important to a lot of my clients to not spend more money on groceries then they were before, so here are my tips to keep your week on track and your grocery bill down... . 1. Before you start, go through your kitchen and see what you have on hand. Plan meals out of any perishable items that will be going bad soon. Try to clean out the fridge once a week to prevent wasting any food! . 2. Have a list of go-to meals that are easy to make and your family likes. We almost always have a “taco” night and I can make that work on any day of the FWTFL food cycle. . 3. Schedule a block of time for grocery shopping…whether you drag yourself to the store, place a ClickList order or scheduled delivery....just get it done. I try to do my shopping without my kids in tow or it is inevitable there will be an extra $30 worth of unnecessary crap in the cart. . 4. Prep food & batch cook. Cooking in large batches saves time AND money. When food is cooked and ready to grab you are much less likely to need to buy lunch out or make random trips to the grocery store throughout the week. . It is always so bittersweet to watch my girls wrap up their FASTer Way to Fat Loss® round. They worked hard, they stayed positive, and they made the commitment to a lifestyle change. I braved not one, but two different malls today as I started my Christmas shopping. And you know what, it wasn't that bad. Maybe everyone is shopping online this year? Tonight you'll catch me with my good friend Amazon Prime. To celebrate that I got some of my shopping done, I made my first batch of holiday fudge. This kid👆🏻. As if I didn’t love him enough, he actually loves to “work out” with me. Today he did the complete leg day workout with me, banded glute bridges and all. He was my cheerleader, saying “good job mommy” and even counting my reps for me. . This example just goes to show you how important it is to implement a healthy lifestyle, not only for yourself but for your kids. They are always watching and always mimicking us. . This doesn’t just apply to working out. What if they see us being nice to people, saying “please” and “thank you” and encouraging others. I think this world would be a little different if we, as parents, would be better leaders and lead by example for our little ones. . Now if I could just get him to copy me in eating his veggies 🥗 🍅 🥦🤔.

It’s #legday!!! This is my favorite day because we workout our largest muscles in our bodies so that we keep burning calories long after we are finished! This makes room for treats! . We have a Christmas party tonight so I’ll be indulging in wine 🍷 & 🧁, and that’s okay! So true!! * • During one of my first years as a personal trainer at 24 Hour Fitness, I met with a new gym member for her complimentary assessment with a trainer. She walked in for our meeting with a 44 oz. Big Gulp of regular Coke and proceeded to tell me she drank two of those every day along with eating fast food pretty much every day. * • In the same breath she told me how she wanted to get healthy and lose weight for her kids and how her numbers at her recent doctor’s visit weren’t good. She said she didn’t know what to do to get the weight off and knew she needed accountability to stay on track. * • We started talking about the cost of personal training, and she immediately said there was no way she could afford that. When I pointed out how much she would save not drinking Big Gulps and eating fast food every day, she told me there is no way she could give that stuff up. * • She didn’t purchase training and I think I saw her in the gym maybe a handful of times and then never again. * • Seeing a quote like this always makes me think of her and others like her who make excuses for why they can’t get healthy....too expensive, no time, can’t give_______up, etc. * • Life is all about choices and priorities. Your health should be top on your list for yourself, your kids, your family, and anyone who cares about you. Typically I use Dave’s Killer Bread but since it’s Saturday I swapped it for my favorite sourdough bread. Macro breakdown: . Carb: Bread, apple, & plantain chips Fat: Avocado & plantain chips Protein: Turkey .
