Let's step #InsideHES on Heritage Awareness Day and explore some of our staff connections to Europe.
Say hello to Chiara Ronchini - the Project Manager of Scotland’s Urban Past, a nationwide community heritage programme. Let’s find out some of her #ScottishConnections to Europe…
❓Can you tell us a bit about your European background? .
My heritage comes from Europe and beyond. I’ve studied #Architecture and Urban Planning in #Italy, the #CzechRepublic, #Finland and the #Netherlands, and ended up learning to speak French, Spanish, Czech and Arabic – somehow! .
Apart from #Edinburgh, I was lucky enough to live and work in other incredible World Heritage cities, such as #Ferrara, #Venice, #Dubrovnik, #Barcelona and #Prague, as well as #Bukhara and #Cairo – having collaborated with #UNESCO on the sustainable management of #WorldHeritageSites since 2008. .
I brought to Scotland my passion for people, #vernacularbuildings and traditional knowledge, and in Scotland, I was fortunate to be able to continue working with local communities in heritage capacity building.
❓What’s your favourite Scottish Connection? .
I could write about Scottish heritage and its connections with Europe forever, but I will only mention one hidden gem that features a special Italian connection – Mansfield Traquair in Edinburgh.
Anytime I visit Mansfield Traquair, I feel I’m transported by the genius of #PhoebeAnnaTraquair into her personal insights of her Florentine travels. The art of Botticelli, Beato Angelico and Giotto is evident in her floral #murals, and becomes very Scottish. Florence goes to Edinburgh, and angels become surrounded by rainbows.
