It would be difficult to list all of the things we love about @masterpiecelondon. Near the top of that list, however, would absolutely be the amazing art you can see from all disciplines, and from galleries all over the world. (We really can’t help ourselves, so we’ll be posting about a couple of those pieces throughout next week.)
First on the list has to be Antoni Tàpies’ massive, powerful “Díptic negre amb creus”, exhibited by Galeria Mayoral. This painting, completed in 1988, served as a vision of the thousands of people who crossed the Berlin Wall to escape East Germany, and those who died in pursuit of freedom before it fell in 1989. We learned the history from the fantastic gallerists at @galeriamayoral - the backstory wasn’t immediately evident from just looking at the piece - so be sure to ask about it when you’re perusing Masterpiece this year.
