This one I find really interesting. We turn birth into a medical event, from the moment we find out about pregnancy and it shouldn’t be (unless something happens that takes the pregnancy or labour into a medical event that needs to be medically managed, but I’m talking specifically about normal physiological pregnancies and births). But we’re pressured from our society to see it as such. And therefore we assume the role of patient, whether or not we are. A woman giving birth is not a patient. She is not sick. Her baby isn’t a patient. They are not sick. In doing so we take the power away from the woman and the parents and give it to the hospital. And that’s never right. “December 16th You can discharge yourself anytime. The length of your stay in hospital, your engagement with the service, is entirely at your discretion. Whether it is antenatally, during labour, or postnatally. You have as many rights postnatally as during birth. Any care plan for you and your baby has to have your agreement. As was said on the 2nd Dec the baby is a separate patient in her or his own right, but the parents give the permission for treatment, which means they can say no. If the doctor or midwife disagrees with the parent they cannot disregard this and go ahead anyway. They would need to go to a court of law. There are a few exceptions, such as immediate threat to life. You do not need to jump through hoops to go home, such as 'a good feed' or bowel movement. You may agree with the recommendation to stay or you may feel the balance of pros and cons weighs in the favour of going home. It is your decision. It happens more often that you would probably think. You will be asked to sign a form but it is a standard thing. 'I have decided I want to discharge myself and my baby. I am happy to sign the appropriate form.' It is all My body. My baby. My choice. Birth rights are human rights. Autonomy. Dignity. Equality. Privacy. 🤰🏼 Hmm... it was a pretty big Sunday lunch, but still...!⠀ ⠀ Baby #4 is almost halfway baked, and I crawled back into the studio today for some much needed exercise.⠀ ⠀ Last week, I actually said (out loud) “I am CRUISING through this pregnancy! 💃🏼💃🏼 Feeling great!”. And of course, the Pregnancy Gods overheard, shook their snooty heads, and pressed the ‘pelvic girdle pain’ button. Repeatedly.⠀ ⠀ Cue sharp shooting pains in one side of my butt, an aching lower back, and that delightful occasional feeling like my left leg will give away when I stand on it... 😖⠀ ⠀ For me, the return of this pain-in-the-butt is a clear reminder that I haven’t given enough time lately to exercise: in particular, to glute and core work over the last few weeks. I’ve been so wrapped up in kids and Christmas and work, I haven’t done a scrap of exercise. Add to that a growing belly, some weight gain, and a little bit of fatigue...! When my butt muscles are less active, the stress goes into my pelvic joints, and it all starts to feel like I’m falling apart. ⠀ ⠀ Lots of girls seem to think that pelvic aches and pains are just part of pregnancy, and something they have to put up with. This is rubbish - there’s heaps you can do yourself, and there’s heaps that a good physio can do to reduce and get rid of pregnancy-related back and pelvic pain. If it’s something that’s affecting your pregnancy - get some help. ⠀ ⠀ I’ll be in the receiving end of some hands-on physio this week, and I’ll be back doing some daily glute exercises at home, to try and get this saggy pregnant butt back into shape. There’s no time for pelvic pain at this end of the year!⠀

When you are midway through your second trimester, it can be a little trickier to do some of your ‘normal’ exercises.⠀ ⠀ Our physios at bodyBEgood love finding new ways to work your core, and improve your strength, without stirring up any aches and pains.⠀ ⠀ Testing out my balance here, as well as building some strength in those thighs 🤩! (Lucky it’s sped up and you can’t see the wobbles - standing on top of the Reformer is a little scary - this isn’t an exercise I’d be doing with any beginners 😳!)⠀ ⠀ Leg strength is sooooo important for Mums, as we spend half our lives picking toys and babies up off the floor!⠀ ⠀ We’ve now got FIVE Pre & Postnatal classes every week, with a time to suit every expectant Mum!

Hi, I’m Taylor. I’m the mom behind BumpTape. This was my last ‘bump’ about a year and a half ago. Suprisingly this third pregnancy was the easiest in a couple of ways.. yes, I was running after the other two and exhausted, but I think I learned how to manage the pain better and listened to my body more. I taped up my bump and stretched out hips, I got prenatal massages, I took naps and I didn’t stress about what to eat/not eat. I just enjoyed myself, making mindful decisions of course. I knew this time that I didn’t have to just bear through the pain and to ask for help. Making a baby is no joke, it’s amazing and it HURTS.. all over. Being a mom & making a baby is an unbelievable challenge, yet we all do it because it is SO worth it. It is just so hard to remember to take care of ourselves as moms as we are pulled in so many directions, but our kids need us to. We need to get relief when in pain, pamper ourselves because we deserve it and rest when we need to rest. The relief I found in my second pregnancy from taping (or having my hubby tape) my aches and pains changed my whole pregnancy experience. I could finally move easier, sleep better, workout and pick up the other children without holding back tears. It was a game changer in babymaking to me and I want every woman to know about it so they don’t have to ‘live’ with the pain for those 9 (or 10!) long months. Enjoy your pregnancy! Pamper yourself!
