When I found out that I was accepted to the Fordham University and Alvin Ailey B.F.A Dance Program, I was beside myself with excitement. Having a late start in ballet made it a tough auditioning process. While in the program, I always felt 10 steps behind my peers. I wasn’t a great turner OR jumper. Ballet class proved to be a struggle. As gradation approached, senior showcase time was in full effect. I wasn’t chosen for any of the senior pieces and felt defeated. I thought there was zero hope in my dancing career and my time in the program was a waste. Low and behold, becoming a group fitness instructor lifted my doubt in ways I couldn’t imagine. Being trained as a dancer usually aligns with having a performance career. Not so: Although I love performing time to time, my role as a teacher takes the reigns. And to help those who come to class in a way that I didn’t think possible without my dance training is elevating and empowering. Never think your efforts go to waste. You might be heading towards a path you didn’t think was waiting for you to take ✨
