A controversial topic but I have to say I wholeheartedly disagree with what Piers Morgan was saying on GMB this morning - categorising all “overweight” people as miserable. Firstly what is classed as “overweight” - I haven’t weighed myself for years but back when I was at uni (same size that I’ve always been!) my GP told me I was almost overweight according to the BMI scale and much as I have body confidence issues I KNOW I’m not overweight. Moreover though everyone is different, everyone has a “natural” body weight and why the hell can’t we just embrace and accept that!? Yes there may be some people for whom being “overweight” is depressing, or if they have health related issues then I agree it probably is the best advice for them to lose weight but that’s THEIR decision, for them, not for anyone else. I equally know people for whom maintaining their slim body is depressing, as they deny themselves the food they love. I know people (myself included) who are probably considered an average body size, and I personally don’t think being either larger or smaller would make me any happier! Why do we target those who are larger, when I know people who are miserable as sin because they slog it out in the gym / don’t eat treats in order to attain a body shape they perceive to be socially acceptable!? I personally couldn’t care less how my friends look (I mean that in the nicest way!) - I love them for them and what’s inside, not for how they look, and if anyone else’s friends make them feel any different I’d seriously question my choice of friends!
