About 6 months ago, I posted something here about elephants, after spending a day in a sanctuary, here in Chiang Mai. A few days ago, I went to another one. And I can’t not write about the experience again.
Elephants are the most awesome gentle giants ever. They are incredibly sensitive and smart beings, with real personalities. Unfortunately, a lot of people take advantage of their strength and impressive appearance to make them work and lift heavy things, or in the entertainment industry. As travelers, we need to be aware of this. We must remember that we vite with our money. If we give money to an industry, that industry will keep existing. That’s why we should give our money to sanctuaries that save elephants, to help them and show that the demand is going towards them, and not towards the cruel parks, circuses or shows. Yes, visiting an elephant sanctuary can be a little pricey, but they need the money to survive. Buying an elephant to save it is extremely expensive. And adult elephants eat about 200 to 300kg of food each day. That costs a lot, even if it’s mostly bananas!
So please, please, please, if you, or anyone you know is going to Thailand or any other country where elephant shows is a big thing, please go to sanctuaries instead, and share the message to raise awareness.
And if you want to learn more about the topic, @lostleblanc posted a short documentary about it that I translated to French, so you can go check it out on his YouTube channel.
