Just came back from seeing Dance of the Vampires. Let's just say that I had trouble in keeping my mouth shut and stopping my hands from clapping after every 20 seconds. The actors were dancing, singing, acting, and sometimes even the characters they were acting out were acting like someone else. The love story of an assistant and an innkeeper's daughter, which started with a singing of a tune and a bathing sponge, reaches a whole new level when vampires are put into the mix. It goes from funny and child love to funny and dangerous love. The play had amazing effects and costumes, not to mention the extras who were swinging, rolling, jumping, dancing, crawling and skipping around a lot of the time. My favourite character has to be the Count: A lonely heart, looking for love, and finally finding it, only to loose it just after making her immortal to an assistant to a vampire researcher. Next has to be the innkeeper's daughter, Sarah. At first she might seem selfish, but look deeper, and you will find a bird who is more than ready, and eager, to leave the nest, only to be stopped by her father. So she escapes at the first chance to the count, and lives the last days of her mortal life in luxury, before turning into a vampire, and then turning her lover into a vampire as well, and then getting a happily ever after. Another noteworthy character is the Count's son, who is gay, and very much infatuated by the assistant. The fact that this homosexual character was written in a play written before the beginning of the 21st century is truly remarkable.
Overall, this play is something I loved, adored, laughed at and enjoyed completely. There was not a moment of distraction for me. From a song about Garlic to a song about running away, this play was beautiful.
My only complaint: The subtitles were too far away, and I had to strain my eyes to read anything. So I didn't strain my eyes, and watched the whole play in German.
