The German language distinguishes between "Heimat" and "Zuhause". London is my home (zu Hause), the place where I currently live. However, the region of Eastern Westphalia is my "Heimat" (home). The concept refers to the emotional ties a person has with a place (country, city, region) and there is no real english equivalent. Heimat is the place u have a deep-rooted fondness to, the place where u feel mostly home. Heimat is the region where I grew up, where my family is, where my roots are and that shaped me. This weekend was the first time in 3.5 years that I came back home during autumn and for the first time I noticed how beautiful Westphalia actually is (i never really considered it an area in Germany worth visiting)... the quietness, the crisp air, the many forests, the autumn colours, the foggy evenings, ... it was magical!
