| Continuation of ADVENTURE TWENTY THREE-FOUR NM |
A friend had suggested we cruise through Taos, saying it was a very beautiful city. The fun thing with GPS, is that it doesn't always realize that your vehicle is not an ATV that can handle Class B roads, so a few U-turns and a split decision to take a shortcut led us to a windy, narrow "path" (to put it nicely). This path winded down through a canyon, where a dozen painters were capturing their own interpretation of the beautiful scenery.
Arriving in Taos was wonderful; beautiful was an understatement. Everything was comprised of adobe, so unlike anything I have ever seen..it was magical. We made the most of the visitor center, charging everything and researching the area. We saw Wheeler Peak was right in the back yard of Taos and decided to set up camp near the base of the mountain. We washed our clothes in the frigid river, made enough food for 10 people (of which we devoured), and prepped all of gear for what would be an amazing adventure.
Wheeler Peak was snow-capped and incredible. The thoughts that come to mind are bliss, exuberant fun and EPIC butt-sliding. It took us a few hours to make it to the top, but when we did, it truly felt like we were on top of the world. The real fun came when it was time to descend... Erik just started skiing down on his feet sliding 10 feet or so with each glide. I got on my tush, and told the boys "Let's go"; we gained speed mighty fast and you could hear our hooting and hollering at the base of the mountain. .
A smile was worn on my face for the rest of the day as we nestled into our camp site that was set right next to a rushing river..the perfect tune to fall asleep to..
