Tip Of The DAY!! "W" sitting- This is when a child will sit with their legs splayed out so that if you looked down from above them, their legs form a "W" shape (as seen in this picture). It is commonly seen with children with low muscle tone or weaker trunk control because it creates a wider base of support, making sitting easier.
Here's the problem- IT'S REALLY BAD FOR YOUR BABY!! W sitting places baby's hips in a position of internal rotation which can affect gait and posture, create orthopedic issues in her legs as muscles get tighter, and limit trunk rotation in sitting.
Here's what to do! If your baby does it occasionally, do nothing- it's fine. But if this is the only way she likes to sit, start fixing her position by placing her in ring/pretzel sitting, her legs straight out in front of her, or even leaning on her arm with her legs out to a side.
As she gets older, tell her to "fix your legs". Though she still may do it some of the time when you don't see, getting her used to healthier sitting options will help her avoid potential future orthopedic issues!
