Yesterday I visited a beautiful allotment site, wandering around in the wet, soggy weather, feeling both joy, at the plots that were full of autumn abundance, but also sadness.
Why sadness? Well there were a lot of plots that appeared empty, uncultivated, lost, unloved. But the reality was a lot of these plots were rented out and folk just not bothering!!
Why sad? Well 2 things!! Firstly I wonder why people must feel they own things, doing the minimum to hold onto their allotment. I think that’s sad.
And secondly it appears that austerity has bitten even in allotments, because I can’t help but think that when there was a full team in the allotments office, these uncultivated spaces would have been relet to folk who really want the space, the old tenant having had the dreaded letter and been dismissed!!
I wonder if sites across the country are struggling? Or is it just here, or just cities?
Anyway, the point of this post is there are lots of allotment sites available here in Bristol, so if anyone’s told you otherwise, ignore them and get involved!! This is when to do it so you’ve got the winter to prep!! Go on!! You know it makes sense!!
