First underwater image: pink salmon running up the river on the way to their spawning grounds. I have a lot to learn still and feel like a total noob with a camera underwater. I was in such a hurry getting my housing together for this trip that I completely forgot a red filter for the camera! Luckily its just below the surface so the light and colours could definitely have been worse. . Pink salmon, also known as humpback salmon because of the hump the males develop once they mature and head back up river to spawn, are the smallest and most abundant species of Pacific salmon. They spawn on a 2 year cycle, and unlike a lot of other salmonids they have distinct even and odd year cycles that don't mix. If anything catastrophic happens environmentally in any given year, such as heavy flooding that washes away all the salmon redds (or nests), that can be catastrophic for decades for that population of pinks in that odd or even year cycle. This is apparently why there are many more fish or fish at all during even years. Aren't salmon amazing? . #salmondance #salmon #pinksalmon #humpies #fish #underwater #underwaterphotography #EarthCapture #ikelite #gonorthisland #explorebc #explorevancouverisland

The suspense of having a beautiful, intelligent, emotional, powerful and symbolic animal underneath you is thrilling and humbling. This planet is not humans' alone, and the ocean is a place we visit but do not stay. @ClayoquotAction taught me this is the definition of 'wilderness'. We can visit, travel and recreate but remember that these creatures live here and we are just passing through. Respecting all life, make decisions based on the well being of all earthlings. ๐Ÿ’™๐ŸŒŽ๐ŸŒŠ . "Do you see the slightest evidence anywhere in the universe that creation came to an end with the birth of man? Do you see the slightest evidence anywhere out there that man was the climax toward which creation had been straining from the beginning? ...Very far from it. The universe went on as before, the planet went on as before. Man's appearance caused no more stir than the appearance of jellyfish." Daniel Quinn, in Ishmael . . N.B. Travelling back to base camp is when we happened upon these beauties. We stopped paddling more than 200 metres from the orcas, and did not travel in their path, to enjoy watching them pass us by. Cetaceans have the right of way. By rafting up we made ourselves one object rather than an obstacle course, and we used a landmark nearby to make sure we weren't drifting with wind or current. We were lucky this beauty was curious and changed her path to pay us a visit. ๐Ÿ’™๐ŸŒŽ๐ŸŒŠ #keepwildlifewild #seeablowgoslow #killerwhale #orca #nrkw #orcanisorca #carpethosediems #postcardsfromthepacific #kayakwithwhales #jointhepod #gonorthisland

Holy Smokes!!! #Repost @kayakwithwhales (@get_repost) ใƒปใƒปใƒป Some of the smaller creatures that inhabit the shores of Northern Vancouver Island are sea urchins. Their prickly body is completely covered by sharp spines that can grow up to 8 cm (3.1 in) in length that allow them to move along the sea floor and rocky shores to feed on seaweeds and algae. Their mouth with special jaws called the "Aristotle's lantern" is located on the bottom, so make sure to handle them with care.
