For those if you that know the Smokies well, you’ll know immediately why the unexpected feelings surfaced tonight.. You see, quicker than I ever thought possible - my heart sank, a lump popped up in my throat and I felt tears trying their best to get to my eyes.. As David Brill said, “Dennis Martin’s family is here tonight.” .. It always breaks my heart when I hear his name, but to hear it and to see his family.. Just crushed me. You see, on June 14th of 1969 at the age of 6 years old Dennis Martin vanished into thin air while celebrating Father’s Day with a backpacking trip to Spence Field. The search for Dennis was the most extensive search in park history with 1,400 searchers in a 56 square mile area. Storms and heavy rains rolled in the night of his disappearance, complicating the search.. Even Dwight McCarter, the best tracker in park history, was on the search team. But, nothing. Absolutely nothing. Tonight, yet again.. Dennis Martin is on my mind.. And well, I pray the day does come that the mountains produce Dennis, if he’s still there.. Among the hills and valleys. That they somehow, someway.. Finally bring his family some type of closure.
