My love for the Blue Ridge is far and wide. After seeing quite a bit of the U.S. last year, I gained a renewed appreciation for the Great Smoky Mountains that I grew up lucky to visit so many times. Funny how we sometimes have to spend time away to truly appreciate what we have. I now try to be grateful each day and stop to find the beauty in even the most mundane things. Have a light filled weekend friends! #jj_forum_2141 #optoutside #findyourpark #mountainadventures #northcarolina #blueridge #goingom #bepresent #beherenow #waterflow #autumncolors #blueridgeparkway #teamcanon #mystory #takemetotheriver #outdoorlife #roadtrip #travelogue #sohum #yogaeveryday #goinghome #greatsmokynps #silhouette

Our last day of hiking was up to Ramsey Cascades. This hike was fairly easy (though uphill) the first 1.5 miles. Around 2 miles we entered more rocky and rooty trails through old growth forest (really cool big trees!). There were also 2 long log footbridges. The last mile was all rock hopping with the final 1/3 mile through/on/around boulders. This was a little scary to me because it rained throughout the entire hike. The rocks weren’t too slick, but I was very careful with every step and we used trekking poles the whole way up and down. The temp was around 60 at the bottom of the hike and low-50s (I think) at the top, but the rain started as a light sprinkle and increased in intensity throughout. We were pretty cold and wet when we reached the frozen waterfall. It was beautiful. The best vantage point required climbing atop a larger boulder and like the wimp I am, I stayed with my feet firmly planted on the ground while Patrick took more pictures. The descent was a bit muddy and slippery in a few places, but we managed with no problems. We encountered a deer family on the way up (a buck, 4 does, and an energetic & curious older fawn), which was cool. We were soaked at at the end of the hike and we’re grateful to have packed a dry change of clothes. In all, a great hike. Like the last one, I would love to hike it again in dry weather. It would be fast and feel less intimidating. #ramseycascades #greatsmokynps #hiking

Day 2 of hiking began with me already exhausted from the day before. The weather at the higher elevations had improved enough to open up some park roads to other trails, so we set off to hike Alum Cave Bluffs up to Mt. LeConte, an 11 mike round trip. However, ice across the path in several places plus my (maybe out of proportion?) fear of falling off a cliff to my death plus fatigue from the previous day led us to cutting the hike shorter to 4.6 by stopping at the Alum Cave Bluffs. (I wasn’t having a good attitude the first part of the hike.) Heading up to the Bluffs, we had 4 ice crossings (one rather long) where we put our ice spikes (@kahtoola MICROspikes) on our boots to cross. We ran into two hikers heading up to @lecontelodge to do some repair work and very much enjoyed visiting with them and listening to their hiking advice. (You know when the experienced hikers who work for the park bust out their ice spikes, you have the right gear.) I’ll be honest, the iciness scared me, especially considering that it would get worse as we climbed up to Le Conte Lodge. After lunch at the bluffs amidst the clouds, we decided to head back down. Just as we were leaving, an icicle from 50 ft above on the bluffs fell and struck my forearm. It was startling and pretty painful—line someone pegged me with a rock. Thankfully it hit on my coat to somewhat cushion the blow, but 6” over and it would have hit me on the head. This was terrifying. We later discovered they rerouted the path near the bluffs due to the danger of falling icicles. The decent was much easier than the climb and we enjoyed the views much more because the clouds had passed. A runner passed us on the way up and then back down who reported a lot of careful butt-scooting to pass some of the icy sections at the top, so I did not regret our choice to cut the hike short. Overall, it was a good hike with the prettiest views we saw during our trip. I’d like to come back on a dry day though. #greatsmokynps #hiking #alumcavetrail #mtleconte

There are a lot of log footbridges at Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Some of you may recall that I have a fear of heights and it translates to walking across narrow bridges as well. This was the first of over a dozen log footbridges I crossed during this hiking trip. This one was fairly short and not very high, but I’m proud of myself for mustering the courage to put one foot in front of the other to get across. I feel really silly and surprised at myself that I’m not braver. Each bridge was a personal test of my moxie. #greatsmokynps #hiking #footbridge #abramsfalls

After Abrams Falls, rather than hiking back the way we came, we decided to make a loop since there were plenty of trail options. Our initial choice of route would have put us at 9 miles total, but we quickly discovered it would require fording an icy river (heck no!), so we rerouted towards Hatcher Mountain and Cooper Rd Trail, which turned out to be a fairly exhausting, but fun 13.5 mile day. I enjoyed the uphill, but my knee was not a fan of prolonged downhills on rockier trails. (Little did we realize that the trekking poles stowed in Patrick’s pack would’ve greatly alleviated this.) In all, we had a great time exploring around Cades Cove. The trails don’t climb very high elevation, so they’re gentler inclines and not as rocky/technical as other parts of the park. There were several other trailheads we would’ve liked to explore in Cades Cove and I could see us spending 3 days hiking just in that area. #greatsmokynps #hatchermountain #cooperroadtrail #hiking #cadescove

Abrams Falls hike. This was an enjoyable and rather easy day hike if you just go out and back. It follows a river most of the way, and though there’s a rise in elevation, none of it feels very steep. A good part of the trail is strewn with tree roots, so you certainly have to watch your footing. (It might have given me trouble running, but hiking was fine.) The weather was warmer than we expected, so we shucked our coats fairly quickly because we built up a lot of body heat, though when we stopped at the falls to eat lunch, we were happy to put them back on. Although the temps were mid-40s, a good bit of the water in the river and edges of the falls were frozen from an epic cold blast the previous week. It was beautiful to see the frozen parts of the river. #greatsmokynps #hiking #abramsfallstrail

A boy and a train... Is there a better combination? Dax on the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad, Oct 2016 | Bryson City, NC You can catch the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad as it debarks from Bryson City on the south side of The Great Smoky Mountain National Park. We took a 2 hour long ride through the Nantahala Gorge with a short stop at the @nantahalaoutdoorcenter. It was 36° this morning so we opted for an enclosed car. I would highly recommend this trip during any time of the year! Swipe for both images. Last week I had been following a buck through a field but finally lost him and as I was heading back to the car I saw this doe. About that time the wind picked up and a hard snow shower ensued so this pretty little lady decided to lie down and wait it out. As cold as it was I couldn’t help but just watch her for a while. I’m so thankful for moments like this when watching wildlife in their environment because it’s about as good as it gets. Hope everyone has a very blessed Friday and weekend as we prepare for another cold wave heading our way! 😊 #wildlife #wildlifeplanet #animalelite #extreme_wildlife #wildlifephotography #exclusive_wildlife #deer #whitetails #cadescovedeer #whitetaildeer #cadescove #cadescovephotography #gsmnp #friendsofthesmokies #smokymountainphotography #smokiesfriends #greatsmokynps #greatsmokymountainsnationalpark #greatsmokynationalpark #nature_brilliance #naturephotogrqphy #allnatureshots #bestnatureshots #postcardworthy @postcardoutfitters #instagramtennessee #865life #alive_photo #nanpapix

....it's #waterfallwednesday and let's visit Smoky Mountains National Park. There are plenty of well known falls in the park but smaller cascades and falls can be seen on every river and stream throughout the park. This small roadside falls is one of my favorites - located just down from Newfound Gap. *All prints available for purchase at www.randytraynorphotography. com #smokymountains #greatsmokeymountainsnationalpark #idratherbeinnature #friendsofthesmokies #greatsmokynps #findyourpark #nps #smokymountains #dreamimage #gsmnp #visitgatlinburg #visitasheville #waterfallmoments #chasingwaterfalls #waterfallmoments #adoramapix #idratherbeinnature #LPM #outsidemagazine #earth_scape #landscapephotographymagazine

The only way to truly understand how amazing Grotto Falls was yesterday, is to witness it for yourself. The formations within the ice, the movement of water that had yet to freeze, the sounds, the Bluish turquoise color and so much more.. Need to be seen and experienced with more than just a photograph.. I had to at least attempt to capture this though.. The one thing that everyone was absolutely amazed with, a massive “ice flower” coming out of the base of the falls.. In person, it was absolutely stunning! 💙

“I've learned that fear limits you and your vision. It serves as blinders to what may be just a few steps down the road for you. The journey is valuable, but believing in your talents, your abilities, and your self-worth can empower you to walk down an even brighter path. Transforming fear into freedom - how great is that?” Soledad O’Brien ... This week’s goal, to turn the fears that are brewing into freedom and turn the life I’m dreaming of living - into a life that I wake up to every morning. 💚

Growing up, my Mom would always tell me that when Tennessee snow doesn’t melt right away, it’s only hanging around because it’s waiting for the next snowfall to join in.. I couldn’t help but think of her words as I walked along the snow lined trails of my Smokies this morning... Because well.. I’m ready for a good snow and my Momma is a very wise lady... 🌬❄️☃️

Grotto Falls.. 1 of a few stops on tomorrow’s Smokies checklist .. I haven’t been up to Grotto since I took this photo in mid September on the way to the Brushy Mountain summit.. Still green and lush as we wrapped up summer.. However, this waterfall, like most in the area, is now frozen solid.. I’ll share a shot of her winter wonderland look tomorrow night! Until.. Bundle up and explore! (With caution.. As temps rise and things start to thaw, there will many areas that are very unstable.)

I felt sorry for this buck as his left eye had been injured. I don’t know if it happened during the rut or even if it’s an injury from fighting but it looks bad.
