HEY. So recently I’ve been trying this exercise where I take a chillhop tune I have never heard before, and I have to do the following:
1. Improvise a coherent and beautiful melody IN ONE TAKE.
2. Verse 2 needs to reflect Verse 1, so I can’t get too crazy with verse 1 and I have to remember it well enough to respond to it. This is like having a conversation with another person. It is only polite to remember what you just said so that you speak coherently, and not like a crazy person.
3. Only play what I know is going to work. ALL KILLER, NO FILLER
4. Since I have never heard the song before, I need to land on the fretboard in key, no noodling to figure it out ahead of time. This helps me practice musical intuition and ear training. I have to intuitively determine song structure on the go, and hang onto what I feel the song is telling me.
Try this exercise and tag me in it! I would love to hear what y’all come up with!
