2 short weeks after arriving Malaysia, we were greeted with another episode of infected eczema. I was particularly mad at myself with this one. It was Raya Haji and he was already looking unwell, yet I insisted on having the celebration as usual. I didn’t let anyone touch him, but I still subjected him to a room full of people. Not just that, I also let him have cloxacillin AGAIN—a type of antibiotics that DIDN’T WORK the first time he had infected eczema. You’d think having doctors as parents would save you from unnecessary medicines, unfortunately that wasn’t the case for both of us at that time. We then changed his antibiotics to co-amoxiclav and he improved almost immediately. It also hit me at this point that his eczema was here to stay. It was no longer the time to sit and hope for the best. As I write this post, my breath is pretty stank from a garlicky dish I had tonight. Today is International 12-hour Fresh Breath Day 🙅🏻‍♀️ . . Day 346: Holistic Living 365 HALITOSIS . . Typically caused by poor dental hygiene, bad breath (halitosis) can actually start in the gut. Dieting (especially keto), alcohol abuse, fasting, diabetes, constipation, smoking, sinusitis, chronic bronchitis, & many medications can all cause halitosis. Morning breath on the other hand stems from dehydration and a lack of saliva in the mouth which helps wash away stinky bacteria. . . ✅Taking a probiotic that contains acidophilus can help to replenish the good gut bacteria and reduce halitosis. ✅Chewing herbs like fennel, anise or cloves after a meal can help ward off bad breath, as does chlorophyll rich herbs like parsley. ⚠️Spicy foods, garlic, blue cheese, anchovies, salami, pepperoni, beer, coffee and whiskey are all known offenders for increasing halitosis. ⚠️And commercial mouthwashes, forget about them! While they initially kill off bad bacteria, the amount of flavouring, dyes and alcohol cause the bacteria to return with a vengeance, not to mention they can irritate your gums and mucous membranes in the mouth. . . With 14 yrs of clinical experience as a UK MD I believe gut health is key to overall health, so I will share some fun facts about gut health: 🌱🌱🌱 👶Research now shows the gut #microbiome to be involved in many functions from digestion, brain health, metabolic health to mental health 🌱We know that 70-80% of the immune system resides in the gut & an inflamed gut can lead to symptoms elsewhere in the body (eg #eczema, #allergies, #headaches) 👶Your baby's gut microbiome is 'set' at ~ 2 yrs of age - what you do before & during the 1st 2 yrs of life is vitally important in the formation of a healthy microbiome 🌱A mother's vaginal flora (ie the living bacteria) changes in last trimester to reflect the beneficial bacteria that a baby needs for a healthy microbiome 👶During vaginal delivery, baby is inoculated w/ bacteria as it passes through birth canal. This is an important part of forming a healthy microbiome 🌱If you have to have a c-section due to medical complications, studies suggest that vaginal swabbing (swabbing a mom's vagina & spreading this to baby's skin, mouth & nose) may replicate some of the beneficial changes to the microbiome seen during a vaginal birth - discuss this w/ your physician 👶The 3rd most common component of human breast milk (after carbs & fat) is something called Human Oligasaccharide (HMO) -this is not used by your baby as a nutrient, but feeds the beneficial bacteria in your baby's gut & encourages the proliferation of strains such as bifidobacterium 🌱THREATS to baby's microbiome: toxins like BPA, heavy metals, pesticides (these have been found in formula & also breast milk, water & foods), & antibiotics (sometimes necessary & lifesaving so please use if needed) 👶To nourish gut microbiome, get back to nature with them (garden, hike, play outside)

🌿 My FOOD PHILOSOPHY (*MY*, the key word here): stick to WHOLE FOODS, unprocessed and unrefined (avoid preservatives, additives, artificial ingredients) eat mostly PLANTS (cooked, they are easier to digest that way) consume high quality PROTEINS (plant-based or free range/grass fed/organic meats and poultry) don’t rely too heavily on GRAINS, but when you do partake, sprouted is the best for gut health (there is a link between grains and autoimmune thyroid disease, thyroid disease runs in my family) high quality FATS (cold-processed, extra virgin oils, whole food plant sources) limit fried foods, oils become damaged and reactive LIMIT processed SUGAR (i use dates, honey, maple syrup in baked goods and treats); but when you’re enjoying yourself, ENJOY YOURSELF! DAIRY, a treat for me when I’m in social situations or out to dinner (2-3 times per month) AVOID that which you have serious adverse reactions to (for me that’s eggs, wheat & soy); I get severe nausea, acid reflux, bloating, brain fog, mood changes, fatigue, amongst other things; it’s best for me to avoid these altogether —— find what works for you. this is what works for me. we are all different. most importantly, NEVER EVER feel guilty about your choices. you have one life and do what makes YOU feel good. NOT what others tell you to do. this way of eating has allowed me to feel my best and be mindful of what I’m putting into my body.
